This first installment of Warcraft, named “The Beginning”, has been an awaited event for ten years. Blizzard Entertainment, the creators of the game Warcraft, announced their plans to develop a movie back in May 2006, but they didn’t proceed until 2013, when director Duncan Jones was brought into the project. Here he contributes to the screenplay, as well.
The movie follows the plot of the highest grossing video game of all time, the war between humans and orcs. It sounds exciting.
Warcraft – Plot
The realm of Azeroth is on the brink of destruction. Its human inhabitants face invasion from orc warriors, themselves having fled their dying world of Draenor through a gateway known as the Dark Portal. With humans and orcs facing annihilation, human warrior “Anduin Lothar” and orc leader “Durotan” find themselves headed for collision, a clash of two races that will determine the fate of both.
Behind the Scenes
Christopher Metzen, the game designer, artist, voice actor and author known for creating the fictional universes and scripts for Blizzard Entertainment‘s three major award-winning media franchises: Warcraft, Diablo and StarCraft, also wrote the story for this particular movie.
Duncan Jones is an esteemed filmmaker with two highly appreciated science fiction movies in his portfolio: Moon (2009) and Source Code (2011). He understands CGI and makes very good use of it.
Ramin Djawadi, from HBO, known (and respected) for his work on movies like Blade: Trinity, Iron Man, and Pacific Rim, or TV shows like “Prison Break” and “Person of Interest”, is composing the score.
The screenplay is written by Charles Leavitt, who was also the screenwriter of the box-office hit Blood Diamond.
Warcraft: The Beginning – Cast
The cast, mostly men, is very appropriate: Travis Fimmel is “Sir Anduin Lothar”, the lead protagonist for the Alliance, Paula Patton is “Garona Halforcen”, a strong-willed orc survivor caught between the Alliance and the Horde, Ben Foster is “Medivh”, the current Guardian of Tirisfal, Dominic Cooper as King Llane Wrynn, ruler of the Stormwind Kingdom, Toby Kebbell as “Durotan”, the noble orc lead protagonist for the Horde, Ben Schnetzer as “Khadgar”, a gifted young mage, Medivh’s apprentice, Robert Kazinsky as “Orgrim Doomhammer”, an extraordinarily cunning orc, Blackhand’s right-hand, Daniel Wu as “Gul’dan”, an orc warlock, the leader of the Shadow Council, Ruth Negga is “Lady Taria Wrynn”, the Queen of Stormwind, King Llane’s wife, Anna Galvin is “Draka”, Durotan’s wife and the mother of his child, “Thrall”, and Clancy Brown is “Blackhand”, a fearsome orc chieftain who wants to become the first chief of the Horde.
“The Horde” and “The Alliance” are terms from the video game.
