I became a fan of Woody Allen‘s movies. I liked him before as well, but now, I declare myself a fan, a bottomless admirer. His last three movies are brilliant, Whatever Works is from far away my favorite, with all the different opinions I received on various media (reddit for sample), that Manhattan is the best Woody Allen ever. I don’t know why I haven’t followed my intuition to answer on spot, that I doubted it, not watching the movie at the time, but I’m pretty sure now. I’m not saying Manhattan is a bad movie, on the contrary, is good. “The nervous romance” as Annie Hall was called, isn’t a favorite of mine, as well. I can’t say all his movies are exceptionally good, the tastes varies anyway through the public as they varies through the critics. I don’t trust the movie critics anymore, they serve other interests, they don’t “critic” the movie itself.
I’ve recently seen his Small Time Crooks and more, almost in a row, Cassandra’s Dream, his second from last, You Will Meet a Tall, Dark Stranger and the last, of course, Midnight in Paris. I can affirm that Small Time Crooks made my top 100, a list I’m going to expand in a few more future posts, :). The same is available with Manhattan Murder Mystery and A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy, but I’m impressed with his last three. Midnight in Paris is an excellent fantasy, pushed a little bit more on the pure fiction land than the Shakespearean parody, in name at least. Midnight in Paris is a fairy tale, with Owen Wilson playing Woody Allen, not quite bad at all. I’ve seen others, and they were not funny. Woody himself is not always funny, but he is always very smart, sharply smart, and that’s what it has to be highly appreciated. He is an artist hard to be replaced when he’ll cease to live. He is more iconic than some Church of Scientology members, actually he is more iconic than all the members. The world of cinema will be poor without Woody Allen. He is very romantic in his last movies, all the three of them. He has anyway a certain talent to make even New York to look like Paris, and Paris to look actually good. The same with every other location, he has the time to find a nice spot no matter how grey the city really is in day by day life, like my beautiful Adriana who sees only the good in everyone, no matter the degree of evil everyone possess. She enjoyed Manhattan as well. It’s not on my list, but I can’t deny it is a good movie, brilliantly acted, with an emerging Meryl Streep as a bonus.

The best things about “Manhattan” (in my opinion):
1. The beginning
2. It’s a cinematographic poem dedicated to Manhattan 🙂
3. It’s in black and white
Aaand thanks 😀 (You know I don’t see only the good in everyone. I simply tend to focus on it :))

Thank you, thank you. I thought about Chaplin as well, so I’ve combined things, a little, 🙂

The song “Smile” reminded me of the context in which I played it to you almost two years ago, one evening when we were both depressed 🙂
