The White Tiger 2021, a Man Booker Prize Adaptation

June 2, 2022 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

The White Tiger group caption: Rajkumar Rao, Priyanka Chopra, Adarsh Gourav, and standing is director Ramin Bahrani

When I first read The White Tiger a few years back, I readily gave it five stars on Goodreads, but the real impact was diluted with other happenings around. Now, this 2008 Man Booker Prize-winning novel has been adapted to a pretty accurate movie. I have also wondered which of these two to review here, the novel, or the movie. I certainly prefer the novel, but the movie is suited for its proper category. Believe me, I have re-read the book right after watching the movie and I was profoundly … [Read more...]

Oscars 2022 – Best Picture Nominees – A Few Comments – Part 1

Best Picture Oscar Nominee 2021 - Don't Look Up! - Leonardo Di Caprio, Meryl Streep, Mark Rylance, Jonah Hill

Looking through the Oscars Best Picture nominations this year, I'm surprised to notice that I watched almost all the mentioned movies. As for the ones I haven't watched yet, I profoundly feel that I'll never do. It happened with Twelve Years a Slave, even when I knew it will win. It was one of those slipped Infos the night before the ceremony, which wasn't a coincidence and it wasn't a good movie either. I shall not watch Belfast, CODA, and West Side Story because I don't resonate with any of … [Read more...]

What’s Wrong With The Tomorrow War 2021? Read and Find Out!

Chris Pratt in The Tomorrow War 2021

The Tomorrow War is a maximum of five out of ten, no matter what you find on the IMDB. I think I'm usually generous with grades, and this is a sign. What's wrong with this expected Science Fiction movie which is not part of Marvel or DC? Plot Even in the USA, people watch FIFA's World Championship. During the final match, live on TV, a platoon materializes on the pitch. A beautiful curly Afro-American lady soldier begs the public for help in a future war happening 30 years later. A war … [Read more...]

Movie Spoilers With the Best Intentions – A new category

Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman (1990) - major movie spoilers in logline

Yes, dear friends, you read it right. I had to create this new sub-category about movie spoilers here because I found it necessary. Of course, the catch is that I want to offer some explanations about why a certain movie derailed, or how. So, that can generate a great chance to spoil some future action in the discussed movie. It is called Spoiler Alert. Don't worry, you may like it. When the movie is dumb and I have watched it, I'll say what I found dumb and why. Maybe it'll help you to avoid … [Read more...]

Perfect Strangers, a Movie Concept started by Paolo Genovese

April 27, 2021 By Daniel Mihai Popescu 6 Comments

Perfect Strangers 2017 - Spain

A few years ago, I watched Perfect Strangers 2017 (Perfectos desconocidos), a Spanish movie by Alex de la Iglesia, one of my favorite directors. Little I knew at the time that the film I liked was actually based on another one, released in 2016, and written by a bunch of Italians including Paolo Genovese, who also directed. So, the original was named Perfetti sconosciuti, and it is the movie with the most foreign replicas ever. I'm watching the original as I'm writing about it, right now. It is … [Read more...]

Oscars 2021 – The 93rd Annual Academy Awards – Nominees and Winners

Oscars 2021 Poster

The Oscars 2021 were better than others. I always thought that Oscars have to be awarded to movies close to spectacular, and to outstanding performances or deeds. This rarely happens, and unfortunately, that won't happen again. Thus I greatly appreciate the persons involved, they exert a great effort from the project's beginning to its end, even if the result is not the best movie ever. If the result is trash, it means they didn't work enough, and they aren't worth mentioning. They wouldn't be … [Read more...]
