Palm Springs 2020 Should Win the 78th Golden Globe Awards

February 28, 2021 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

Andy Samberg & Cristin Milioti - Palm Springs 2020

Palm Springs is a directorial debut for Max Barbakow, otherwise a very fine screenwriter. It is flawless. Unfortunately regarding the Golden Globe nominations, it is listed just for the Best motion picture, musical or comedy, and for Best Actor in a motion picture, musical or comedy for the SNL alumni, Andy Samberg. This is a fantasy-comedy-mystery-romance with a witty screenplay and out of the ordinary. I don't want any spoiler here in my short sort of review, with my deepest regrets, because … [Read more...]

The Death of Stalin, One of the Best Comedies of 2017

February 20, 2021 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

Steve Buscemi, Olga Kurylenko, and Simon Russell Beale in The Death of Stalin (2017)

In a Rotten Tomatoes list with best comedies of 2018, The Death of Stalin is on #6, after movies like Keep the Change, Bathtubs Over Broadway, Eighth Grade, and Oh Lucy!. That is insane! Nobody heard of those, I'm sorry. It seems that Armando Iannucci's movie is the best of 2018, and of 2017, the official released year. It is said that all the best comedies contain serious messages. Now The Death of Stalin is a satire and a comedy which is advisable to be considered as such. Seriously? There's … [Read more...]

Envy, an Underrated Barry Levinson, Like a Pearl in the Mud

September 4, 2018 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

Ben Stiller and Jack Black in Envy

Barry Levinson's Envy, is one of the future cult movies, believe me. I don't understand why it is so overrated, but I hope that this will change when people will start to think with their heads, not with the subliminal advertising for Twilight or Wonder Woman. An obvious example is Envy, by Barry Levinson which has after many years come to a 4.8 out of ten on imdb. Is it maybe because watchers don't like Jack Black, or, worse, Ben Stiller? I know that Roger Ebert didn't gulp Ben Stiller for … [Read more...]

Three Inter-related Funny Fantasy Movies You’ll Love

April 13, 2018 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

Freaky Friday - Jamie Lee Curtis, Lindsay Lohan

These three inter-related movies are funny fantasy movies I liked myself. It is obviously a subjective opinion, it is based on my taste which is not as out of place as it sometimes seems. They are connected in ways you'll discover by reading this article. If you already watched them, you will certainly figure out what this is about. [source of all pictures: imdb.com] Freaky Friday First of them is Freaky Friday (2003), directed by Mark Waters. It stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay … [Read more...]

Frances Ha, a Less Conventional Comedy in Black and White

February 27, 2018 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

Frances Ha - Greta Gerwig and Mickey Sumner

Frances Ha is a sensitive and positive movie which proves that if you believe in yourself, you can overcome the malice and the surrounding egoism. It is a black and white masterpiece, satirical, humorous and a little paranoid. It is a movie where you recognize a jerk from the first minute you see him/her even if Frances doesn’t spot them till the end. [source for all pics: imdb.com]   Frances Ha is not a conventional comedy Indeed, Frances Ha is not conventional, but in all of … [Read more...]

Young Frankenstein Can Be the Only Comedy You Ever Need to Watch

October 5, 2017 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

Gene Wilder and Madeline Kahn

Young Frankenstein is a classic iconic comedy produced and directed by Mel Brooks in 1974. It is loosely based on Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's novel, "Frankenstein". If you haven't watched it yet, you better do it as soon as possible, because this is one of the best comedies you'll ever watch. What Is Young Frankenstein About? I used this title because it is what I feel. This is the perfect comedy. Doctor Frederick Frankenstein is the old Baron (Viktor) Frankenstein’s grandson, an … [Read more...]
