Envy, an Underrated Barry Levinson, Like a Pearl in the Mud

September 4, 2018 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

Ben Stiller and Jack Black in Envy

Barry Levinson's Envy, is one of the future cult movies, believe me. I don't understand why it is so overrated, but I hope that this will change when people will start to think with their heads, not with the subliminal advertising for Twilight or Wonder Woman. An obvious example is Envy, by Barry Levinson which has after many years come to a 4.8 out of ten on imdb. Is it maybe because watchers don't like Jack Black, or, worse, Ben Stiller? I know that Roger Ebert didn't gulp Ben Stiller for … [Read more...]

The Disaster Artist, the Book Loosely Inspiring the Homonymous Movie

March 31, 2018 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

Greg Sestero posing with The Disaster Artist, the Book

The Disaster Artist is a movie directed by James Franco. He played Tommy Wiseau, the weird self-made producer, director, and writer of the cult movie The Room. His brother, Dave Franco, played Greg Sestero, an actor-model who is credited as the book’s author, but my feeling is that a ghostwriter made it. Doesn’t matter because this time, both movie and book are very entertaining, almost like The Room itself. Not Necessarily a Parallel Don’t think that Franco kept the script like the book’s … [Read more...]

The Usual Suspects – One Top Cult Mystery Thriller

August 15, 2016 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

The Usual Suspects - (from left) Kevin Pollack, Stephen Baldwin, Benicio Del Toro, Gabriel Byrne, and Kevin Spacey.

One of my Top 10 movies of all times, The Usual Suspects is a cult mystery crime thriller released in 1995, written by Christopher McQuarrie, and directed by Bryan Singer. It doesn't have to make sense, actually, because it is too catchy on the whole. Everything started with and from a police lineup. McQuarrie made all up while working for a lawyer. The movie was shown first at Cannes Film Festival in 1995, out of the competition. After that it had a very reduced distribution in America, but … [Read more...]

Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man

April 1, 2015 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

Dead Man - Johnny Depp, Mili Avital

Dead Man is a 1995 American movie written and directed by Jim Jarmusch. It is a Western-Drama-Fantasy with Johnny Depp and Gary Farmer, shot entirely in black and white. Johnny took his hat from Benny and Joon and carried magisterially on. I always wanted to feature Jim Jarmusch in Movie Personalities, because I'm a huge fan. I'm going to treat this more seriously. Like all his other movies (I think I have seen them all), Dead Man is a cult movie. It is a fantastic story pictured as a … [Read more...]

Mr. Nice, a Very Cool Movie

March 29, 2015 By Daniel Mihai Popescu 1 Comment

Mr. Nice - David Thewlis, Rhys Ifans

Mr. Nice is a British and Spanish co-production released in 2010, largely based on the best seller autobiography with the same name, by Howard Marks. The movie has a much lower degree of good appreciation than it deserves, which is very unfortunate. A certain pattern of education is implemented along the lines that the cannabis is bad and must not only be avoided, but has to be forbidden. Users and more than them, the merchants, must be punished through extermination. [source: imdb] It … [Read more...]
