Indian Movies

Indian movies in general. Director is Indian, the cast may be Indian, doesn't matter if they were made at Bollywood or Hollywood.

The White Tiger 2021, a Man Booker Prize Adaptation

June 2, 2022 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

The White Tiger group caption: Rajkumar Rao, Priyanka Chopra, Adarsh Gourav, and standing is director Ramin Bahrani

When I first read The White Tiger a few years back, I readily gave it five stars on Goodreads, but the real impact was diluted with other happenings around. Now, this 2008 Man Booker Prize-winning novel has been adapted to a pretty accurate movie. I have also wondered which of these two to review here, the novel, or the movie. I certainly prefer the novel, but the movie is suited for its proper category. Believe me, I have re-read the book right after watching the movie and I was profoundly … [Read more...]

Dhoom 3 Is the Pearl of the Crown in a Bollywood Action Franchise

August 5, 2019 By Daniel Mihai Popescu 1 Comment

Aamir Khan in Dhoom 3

Dhoom 3 is an Indian adventure flick which crowns a pretty successful series starring supercop Jai Dixit with his colleague Ali. With this post I officially inaugurate the new subcategory I named "Indian". This doesn't seem that the films reviewed here were all made in Bollywood because I sincerely don't think that Pan Nalin or Mira Nair made movies according to these rules. Dhoom 3 is a standard Bollywood production, as the whole series is, but this one is the best in everything. This movie's … [Read more...]

English Vinglish – An Exceptionally Entertaining Indian Drama/Comedy

Sridevi in English Vinglish 2012

English Vinglish is an amazing Indian movie (the second presented here) released in 2012. It has now a 7.9 imdb rate out of ten with over 25k votes, which made the movie virtually accountable for the famous imdb Top 250. When I was still navigating in the nineties, I made some Indian friends who told me a lot about Bollywood and the stars of that moment. So, I learned about Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, Juhi Chawla, Darmeendra and others. I knew Raj Kapoor since I was a kid and I have … [Read more...]

Valley of Flowers

Valley of Flowers - riding through the Himalayas

Valley of Flowers (La Vallée des fleurs) is a 2006 French-German-Indian Independent Film directed by Pan Nalin of Samsara fame. This is one of the best movies I've ever seen, it is beautiful, catchy, passionate, and spiritual. I think that it is unfortunately not known at large. I feel that writing about it, is revealing enough to spoil the surprise. [source of all pics: imdb] It is an adventurous romantic drama, it is a love story of at least two centuries, started at the beginnings of … [Read more...]

Midnight’s Children – The Movie

Midnight's Children - Shriya Saran, Satya Bhabha

One of the most acclaimed novels of all times, Midnight's Children, by the highly controversial author, Salman Rushdie , has been put on screen by another Indian, who lives in Canada now, Deepa Mehta. I have read the book a few times, it's the best book ever written by Rushdie, and it's also the most awarded of his entire creation. He is partly famous because of a major controversy, created by his fourth novel, The Satanic Verses, which provoked protests from Muslims in the whole world. Death … [Read more...]

3 Idiots

India is an amazing country, as I have already stated in the linked post. I have finally watched these days, a real Bollywood masterpiece, one that has broken the box office record outside India at the time of release, in 2009. Usually it is a matter of tastes regarding this musical tragedies, some of them are really entertaining, others are just boring and stereotypical. Not this one. 3 Idiots is a perfect mix between comedy (it is more of a comedy than a tragedy), drama and music. Actually it … [Read more...]
