Dhoom 3 Is the Pearl of the Crown in a Bollywood Action Franchise

August 5, 2019 By Daniel Mihai Popescu 1 Comment

Dhoom 3 is an Indian adventure flick which crowns a pretty successful series starring supercop Jai Dixit with his colleague Ali. With this post I officially inaugurate the new subcategory I named “Indian”. This doesn’t seem that the films reviewed here were all made in Bollywood because I sincerely don’t think that Pan Nalin or Mira Nair made movies according to these rules. Dhoom 3 is a standard Bollywood production, as the whole series is, but this one is the best in everything. This movie’s critics offer details about the sources of inspiration, and by that throwing with spoilers in your face. You know I hate that, so I won’t abide. Besides, how can you compare Dhoom with the Fast and Furious franchise? It will be like comparing absolutely non-actors like Vin Diesel, the late Paul Walker, and Michelle Rodriguez, with great talents like Aamir Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, or Katrina Kaif.

As a matter of fact, I watched only the original Fast and Furious, so I’m not in a position to know. I would be very surprised when an actor I do not like just because he has no talent (obviously, take Hayden Christensen, for example, or even Vin Diesel), to perform a big role. He will never be given such a role, in the first place.

Dhoom 3 – Plot

There are three movies in the Dhoom franchise, but they don’t seem related, except by two characters’ presence, two cops. I can guarantee that you don’t have to watch the other two in order to grasp Dhoom 3. The action happens in Chicago, where The Great Indian Circus majestically managed by Iqbal Khan, has on the show an unseen number combining acrobatics with magic. The owner pitches the number in front of Western Bank of Chicago’s head and his two aides, helped by his 10 years old son. The aides are pleasantly impressed, but the CEO is obnoxious and his reaction is overtly racist. Anyway, his decision to foreclose the circus has consequences. In twenty years from now, someone is robbing his bank’s branches blind, leaving behind messages in Hindi, and also a clown’s mask. Therefore, the Chicago Police Department requests the unavoidable services of the famous Mumbai cop, Jai Dixit. He arrives at the last crime scene accompanied by Ali, a funny guy who loves good looking women. Just before that, they were being hunted by goondas in a Mumbai slum, using a motored rikshaw like a racing bike. Unfortunately, Jai managed to make the poor vehicle into a pile of rubbish.

It is easy to imagine that the robber is the Circus owner’s son, now thirty. His trademark is that after every heist, it rains over the place with hundred dollar bills like confetti. He was lucky enough to have the pleasure to employ Aalya at the circus, a very talented woman artist, who’s great assets are not properly used in this movie. I mean that she’s fine, but she appears too little.

Cast

Aamir Khan is Sahir, the main character, and the undisputable soul of this movie. Abhishek Bachchan is Jai Dixit, a police expert. Katrina Kaif is Aaliya, a circus artist. Uday Chopra is Ali, Jai Dixit’s partner. Tabrett Bethell is Victoria, a police officer, or FBI, whatever, doesn’t matter. Jackie Shroff is Iqbal Khan, Sahir’s father, The Great Indian Circus’ Owner. Andrew Bicknell is Anderson, the loathsome Chicagoan Bank’s Head.

Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya who also has written the script with Aditya Chopra.

Trailer

The trailer is a little bit revealing for my taste, but I’m sure there are lots of you who need more than my simple and unspoiled review to be convinced to watch this entertaining movie.

Indian Cinema

Maybe Dhoom 3 was ill reviewed in Time Out London because there is always a matter of subjectivity regarding the Bollywood approach in the Western world. The guy who did it is an Indian himself, a scholar criticizing movies in his spare time. He mentioned Aamir Khan showing off his naked torso as a Brit would say about how Matthew McConaughey is showing off his naked butt whenever the moment arrives. He said that Katrina Kaif’s only talent stays in her sculptured abs and her long legs, but this is a huge misrepresentation. We have never enough of Katrina Kaif, especially here, where her role was only to balance the male screen presence. What to say about the Australian Tabrett Bethell, who slightly participates as a piece of decor around Abishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra? Maybe she deserved more as well, only this time, Dhoom 3 is less than three hours long, not as in the classic Bollywood scenario. You’ll see if you’ll watch. Not a ten out of ten, but certainly not a bad movie at all. I especially liked the twist.

Dhoom 3 eventually grossed US$28 million in international markets in its lifetime overseas theatrical run and surpassed the record of 3 Idiots to become the highest grossing Bollywood film in international markets .
