Outstanding and spectacular, this 2010 action movie. The imdb rate shows that, it’s a 6.8, which is not bad with such a distribution. I’m sure they have their own fans, but there’s no Russell Crow, Robert DeNiro, Jason Statham or Clive Owen on it, these last two seeming to be specialized in “action heroes” roles.
We found here Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Clay, a colonel), Zoe Saldana (Aysha), Idris Elba (Roque), Chris Evans (Jensen), Columbus Short (Pooch), Óscar Jaenada (Cougar), Jason Patric (Max), Holt McCallany (as Wade, Max’s first aide).

Morgan is representative as usual, I know him from soaps like PS. I Love You or Accidental Husband (along the other Taurus, Uma Thurman). He is good here, leading a team of CIA “black ops”, unnaturally through Bolivia. Unnaturally like this sort of actions in movies, otherwise, long distance to Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables, a total trash if you ask me, even if I understood the metaphor in Rambo’s head (the tough muscular guy falling instantly into a forbidden love with the curvy Latino who needs rescue).
I don’t want to disclose the action here, I’m only willing to say that the effects conquered me totally, it was a better representation than any James Bond before Daniel Craig. The characters are created comics style, they are created by Andy Diggle, the comic writer (he was involved in some Spiderman stuff as well). The screenplay was written by Peter Berg (writer, actor and producer, oh my) and James Vanderbilt (Zodiac, Basic). No big words, simple and unboring.
Sylvain White, the director, is the son of an American professional basket player and a French stewardess. He isn’t very famous, quite low rated for Stomp the Yard, a 2007 movie where he worked with Columbus Short, the Pooch character in The Losers.
Without spoiling it, here is a short synopsis. Originally a Special Forces team integrated with the Central Intelligence Agency, Roque, Jensen, Cougar, and Pooch, all lead by Clay (Morgan), were betrayed by their handler, Max, and left for dead following the conclusion of their last operation, placed in Bolivia. Eager for revenge, they regroup and conduct covert activities against the CIA and its interests, uncovering operations headed by Max (Patric), whose influence within the CIA and U.S. government is very enigmatic and left unexplained.
The indisputable star of the movie is Neytiri, of course, the chocolate panther Zoe Saldana, born in New Jersey and living for seven years in the Dominican Republic, until she reached seventeen. I have seen her for the first time in Guess Who, near Ashton Kutcher and late Bernie Mac. She plays a lot, she knows to dance, she prepared very professionally for this action movie, with fighting trainers and weapon handling. She is really noticeable here.

It starts with a cruel fact (again, I’m not spoiling it even if it’s in the first five or six minutes), but the made of it is very entertaining. Not to many details either, not a perfect logic, it’s a comic book on screen. You are not going to lose your time or your minds with it.
