“Life made him tough. Love made him strong. Music made him hard.”
“Walk Hard” is a hit comedy, one of my favorites so far. I thought of this post for more than six months, but always appeared something else in the way, and I needed to do more research. It is complex, and if it seems that the structure is based on mocking “Walk the Line”, it is an original movie, with original songs, which pays tribute to Johnny Cash, punk rock, the Beatles, The Doors, Bob Dylan, and many more.
John C. Reilly sings and plays the guitar himself and he’s not the only one; Joaquin Phoenix did the same while impersonating Cash.

I have said somewhere, maybe in an old post here, maybe on Twitter or Google Plus, that “A Night at the Roxbury” is my favorite comedy of all times, but this one came close. It is utterly hilarious, with sex jokes without being vulgar, it is a pity the imdb rating is so low. It deserves to be in the top 250 on imdb. I perfectly understand how promotion works and that a movie with a huge budget has to be promoted to at least double that budget, but it’s sad that people are so busy that they are not taking a comedy as it should. As a small divagation, recently, “Movie 43”, another comedy, sarcastic and quirky, has been declared one of the worst movie of all times. A lot of things were mocked in it and a lot of good and top dollar acted. It was a guff, and the people and critics who said it was worse, have lost their sense of humor. If you laugh at something, you are or a sexist, or a racist, or anti-Semite. By the way, only jokes with Muslims and Jesus are allowed, and appreciated by “movie critics”. Shame on them.
A very special cast: John C. Reilly, Nat Faxon, Tim Meadows, Raymond J. Barry, Margo Martindale, Rance Howard, Kristen Wiig, Craig Robinson, Harold Ramis, Philip Rosenthal, Martin Starr, Chris Parnell, Matt Besser, Frankie Muniz, Jack White, Angela Little, Odette Annable, Tyler Nilson, Jenna Fischer, Gerry Bednob, David Krumholtz, Jane Lynch, Simon Helberg, Jacques Slade, Jackson Browne, Jewel Kilcher, Lyle Lovett, Ghostface Killah, Eddie Vedder, Jack Black, Morgan Fairchild, Patrick Duffy, John Michael Higgins, Jonah Hill, Cheryl Ladd .., Justin Long, Paul Rudd, Jason Schwartzman, Cheryl Tiegs.
This is a movie to watch, not to speak of it. I’ve seen it eleven times, almost as many times as I’ve seen “A Night at the Roxbury”. I don’t want to spoil it, but be prepared to laugh till you can’t breathe. Better grab something you like or love and sit down on a comfortable chair, put the DVD or BluRay disc in your player, or access your Netflix and watch it again if you haven’t yet!
Directed by Jake Kasdan, produced by Judd Apatow, Jake Kasdan and Clayton Townsend, written by Judd Apatow & Jake Kasdan. A 2007 release, 6.7 imdb rate. A few weeks before launching, John C. Reilly went in a tour with his “band” as “Dewey and the HardWalkers” and performed live all the songs from the movie.
I wanted to review a few Oscar nominees in this period, because the awards are fresh in your minds, but there is a lot of time for that too.
Above you have the comedy trailer, but below you have real talent from three “comedians” with voices: Will Ferrell, Jack Black and who else if not John C. Reilly, at the Oscars – 79’th Annual Academy Awards®, when “The Departed” won Best Picture, despite every critic in town who named “Movie 43” “The worst movie ever made”, predicted “Babel” as the winner!
