Divergent is the first movie in an young-adult dystopian series, created on the model of Hunger Games. Great success, and quite enjoyable, comparative with that absurd Hunger Games. I have to say that I couldn’t bring myself to watch the sequels. They have no logic. But this post is about Divergent, not Hunger Games. This is a movie made after the first volume of Divergent trilogy, which is a series of young adult science fiction adventure novels by Veronica Roth. The trilogy consists of Divergent (2011), Insurgent (2012), and Allegiant (2013)

Action takes place in a futuristic Chicago, seemingly post apocalyptic, where the perfect harmony in society has been attained by dividing the population into five factions. These are: “Erudite” (the intelligent), “Amity” (the peaceful), “Candor” (the honest), “Dauntless” (the brave), and “Abnegation” (the selfless). The “Erudite” is the one with the scientists and technicians, “Amity” gives the farmers, the land workers and the food producers, “Candor” is composed of people who always say the truth, so they make the justice apparatus, “Dauntless” are not only the brave, but also the crazy, so they are secretly admired by almost everyone, they are the army and the police, they are establishing “order”. At last but not least, are the people of “Abnegation”, the selfless who also feed the factionless, but they are chosen for the government.
Sixteen year old, undergo every year an aptitude test that indicates the faction into which they would best fit, no matter of the faction of origin. The test is just informal, they can choose whatever faction they like, at the annual “Choosing Ceremony”, in the presence of every faction Leadership, their families and their peers.
The risk of not choosing right, meaning what the test indicated, their origin, etc, is really absurd. In an ordered society, where the frisks can be eliminated peacefully, by re-integration in the most efficient class, where they maybe belong, the ones not really suited for their chosen faction, after the training period become factionless. The pariah. The factionless survive just because Abnegation members feed them with selfishness. They can’t work, they can’t integrate, they are sometimes hunted by the Dauntless, for cleaning space and for fun.
“Beatrice Prior”, the main character, played by Shailene Woodley, found out at the test that she doesn’t belong to any faction, she is “Divergent”. She had “Dauntless” aptitudes, “Erudite” and of “Abnegation”. “Tori” (played by Maggie Q), a “Dauntless” girl who administered the serum and interpreted the test, out of compassion or sympathy, wrote “Abnegation” as the result, and warned “Beatrice”, who came from an “Abnegation” family, very close to the Rulers, to tell no soul that she is “Divergent”, not even her parents.
I say no more, so if you haven’t watched it yet, you’ll be excited to find out on your own what’s happening, and how it continues.
It has a great distribution f whom a few are as follows: Shailene Woodley as “Tris”, Theo James as “Four”, Ashley Judd as “Natalie”, the mother, Jai Courtney as “Eric”, Ray Stevenson as “Marcus”, the Leader, Zoë Kravitz as “Christina”, Miles Teller as “Peter”, an intelligent and cruel boy, Tony Goldwyn as “Andrew”, the father, Ansel Elgort as “Caleb”, the brother, Maggie Q as “Tori”, the good soul I have already mentioned of, Mekhi Phifer as “Max”, a “Dauntless” lieder, Kate Winslet as “Jeanine”, an “Erudite” ambitious lieder.
Divergent, a 2014 release, Directed by Neil Burger, based on a novel by Veronica Roth, written by Evan Daugherty and Vanessa Taylor, 6.9 imbb rate out of ten, 139 minutes.
No matter what big critics say, it’s better than Hunger Games, you will understand if you watched the movie. A 9 from me.
