Foxcatcher, my friends, is a very dark movie from the beginning. It started very somber, continued in this note and had a terrible finale. I’m not very fond of biographical movies because when you know the persons involved, there is no more surprise. You watch the technique, the play, the talent, maybe.

Foxcatcher is not nominated for Best Picture this year, but it determined another three important nominations, the Best Actor for Steve Carell, who seems to be considerably better in “serious” roles, Best Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo (very good choice), and Best Directing, for Bennett Miller. Very good choices all. I even liked Channing Tatum who wasn’t bad playing a Scorpio. I didn’t know anything about John “the Eagle” du Pont personally, or about Schultz champion brothers, so everything was a surprise for me.
I have noticed again Sienna Miller in a wife role, more or less consistent.
I hope you don’t mind if I’m not starting to elaborate the plot here, it is a good movie, even if it prepares the viewers from the beginning with something terrible, but only if you don’t know what this is (if you don’t know who John Eleuthère du Pont was, or David Schultz, or even Mark Schultz) you’ll be surprised. I knew of course the name “du Pont”, as being one of the financial leading families in United States, but I have never went deeper. I know about Rockefellers and Rotschilds though.
Without revealing the plot, for you to know is that Mark and David Schultz were American wrestlers in the eighties, gold medalists, John du Pont was a rich du Pont Dinasty heir and “Foxcatcher” is du Pont’s farm in Pennsylvania, where his mother breaded horses and John “the Eagle” dreamt himself of being a wrestler.
Steve Carell is perfect in the role, but as I have said at least twice before, it’s Redmayne who is more freakish this year, so he will be awarded the Best Actor.
So, directed by Bennett Miller and written by E. Max Frye and Dan Futterman, is based on very real events. It stars Steve Carell as John Eleuthère du Pont (American billionaire, philanthropist), Channing Tatum as Mark Schultz (Olympic gold medal-winning wrestler), Mark Ruffalo as Dave Schultz (Olympic gold medal-winning wrestler, Mark’s older brother), Vanessa Redgrave as Jean du Pont (John’s mother), Sienna Miller as Nancy Schultz (Dave’s wife).
Nominated for five Oscars, it had a budget of $24 million, but made only $15 million up to this date. 134 minutes, a 7.3 out of ten imdb rate. It has a good press, but it’s too dark and cloudy. Unfortunately no way for any important Oscar, even if it won Best Director Award at the 2014 Cannes Festival where competing for Palme D’Or, lost the great prize in favor of Turkish Kış Uykusu (Winter Sleep), by Nuri Bilge Ceylan. Good movie, it got a nine (out of ten) from me.
I still have to watch Selma and Wild for Best Picture, and at least Still Alice for Best Actress, especially because it seems that Julianne Moore is the main favorite to this award. As much as I like Rosamund Pike (because I loved for her role in Barney’s Version), she was not Oscar strong. We’ll see.
