Den of Thieves is a very entertaining heist movie made recently by Christian Gudergast. A perfect action/crime/drama/thriller one needs to watch twice to be able to connect all the dots. That is only because this movie has a switch you’ll all like in the end.

They say at the beginning that every 11 minutes a bank is robbed in LA. I found it a little sensational. I thought that it’s just a movie, let me see if it will be better than London Has Fallen, The Butler flick I previously watched, which it was less entertaining than a cartoon. I mean, I was not entertained, to paraphrase another beefy character who facilitates an Oscar to the actor.
Den of Thieves – Plot
The movie starts in full action, an armored truck is attacked by a gang, someone got excited and kills a “uniform”, police comes and a shooting takes place. The gang kills all the “uniforms” there, except the civilian clerk, witness to the heist. They leave with the truck and their car, regrouping in a garage facility somewhere. They open the truck and we see it’s empty.
Next day, police, FBI and the County Sheriff teams were there to acknowledge the facts. Big Nick O’Brien is the Sherriff’s leader. His guys are tattooed and unconventional. O’Brien himself looks rather like a biker gang’s member than a Government official. He has an ironic exchange with one FBI, and he won the case. It won’t become Federal until it will become Federal. Sort of lame, but as I said, it’s a movie.
O’Brien and his team went to their headquarters and have a brainstorming. They knew of someone named Merrimen who recently came out of prison. He is a pro robber, meaning he’s also smart. What we learn next is the unfortunate truth: “Playing the streets are all ex-military or sportsmen”. They connect based on this underground. A Dog Day Afternoon’s time is long lost. Modern thieves are warriors. From a clue to another, they connect a guy named Donnie to Merrimen. Donnie is a bartender in a very interesting locale, owned by someone named Ziggy.
O’Brien waits until the owner made the sign to cut it out for the night, and approaches Donnie. Next, Donnie wakes up in a hotel suite, being watched by a gang of bikers look alike and some strippers, or escorts, or something. All men are beefy, tattooed and look dangerous. Eventually he accepts his connection to Merrimen but doesn’t said a word more, claiming he’s only a driver.
To find out more and of what this movie is about, you have to watch it. It is a good watch, even if it has some holes, but it’s ok, because it has a steady and methodical pace. If you like action movies with brains, this is one of them.
Cast
Gerard Butler is ‘Big Nick’ O’Brien, County Sheriff’s gang leader. Pablo Schreiber is Ray Merrimen, the den of thieves’ gang leader. O’Shea Jackson Jr. Ice Cube in Straight Outta Compton is Donnie Wilson, a barman and a good driver. You don’t know who is the second lead in this movie, him, or Schreiber. 50 Cent is Enson Levoux, Merrimen’s right hand. Meadow Williams is Holly, Merrimen’s wife or girlfriend, or just mistress. We will find out she’s also a stripper. Maurice Compte is Benny ‘Borracho’ Magalon, one of O’Brien’s team. Brian Van Holt is Murph Connors, another one of the sheriffs. Evan Jones, the 8Miles’ Cheddar Bob is Bo ‘Bosco’ Ostroman, a nervous thief. Dawn Olivieri is Debbie O’Brien, Big Nick’s wife.
Den of Thieves is directed by Christian Gudergast and written by himself and based on a story by Paul Scheuring.
Trailer
The above trailer has less spoilers than expected, otherwise, every critic in town starts his/hers exposé with the clue. Bad boys… I think Butler’s name is enough to awake interest, one doesn’t have to mention the central event.
Some Trivia
You don’t expect posh film critics to agree with the public’s taste for Den of Thieves. Cops and robbers, robbers and cops, the loose-cannon ‘Big Nick’ behaves more like the gangsters than a cop. I think it’s a good movie for a directorial debut and I’m sure you’ll like it as well.
