There are famous persons in this world who weren’t famous from the beginning, they have worked for their status and they achieved a certain degree of respect from their peers. Not all of them remained modest til the end. Please read the following paragraphs:
“In our opinion, most search engine optimization (SEO) is bullshit. It involves trying to read Google’s mind and then gaming the system to make Google find crap. There are three thousand computer science PhDs at Google trying to make each search relevant, and then there’s you trying to fool them. Who’s going to win?
Tricking Google is futile. Instead, you should let Google do what it does best: find great content. So defy all the SEO witchcraft out there and focus on creating, curating, and sharing great content. This is what’s called SMO: social-media optimization.”

These two paragraphs are not out of context, they are the context. When I read those words, my … admiration for the guy who wrote them shattered in pieces. What an ignorant affirmation! So, when you try to optimize your relevant content to be found by the over-tampered and “customized” Google search, you actually try to fool 3k computer science doctors who made all that they could to bury you (and your content) in favor of a recognized brand? Is it so? When the brand ranks higher than you, is this meaning that the brand’s content is better than yours?
When someone offers them more advertising money than you, just to rank higher in searches, who is the tricked one? When you want to insert your opinion, or your creative text, just for the sake of it, the brand will come first, because it has bigger funds.
Famous Persons Sometimes Use Social Media Differently
The “Social Media Powerhouse”, who likes to be praised because he is a brand worshiper, doesn’t actually like friends, he isn’t quite “social” himself.
“For me, Social Media is a marketing platform, it is a meaning to an end, it is not a way for me to get more friends or to make more relationships; I’m happily married, I have four children, I don’t want any more friends. I don’t wanna be your friend, OK? And I admit that freely, clearly upfront.”
He relates himself to Karl Lagerfeld who declared that he never flies commercial, only private jets because he wants to meet no one, except that our fellow here, sometimes flies commercial: “If I didn’t know you and we are sitting together in an airplane, I would literally say not one word to you in ten hours.”
Have you already recognized the gentleman?
One more clue: In a book about writing and publishing he wrote with someone else, he “humble” suggested that a MacBook Air is the best writing instrument. Other times he repeatedly affirmed that he will not speak with you if you don’t own a MacBook because he can’t trust your judgment if you don’t use the best possible tool.
It Is Easy to Speak Even When You Don’t Understand
Now, I really don’t care about his personal life, it’s his right to believe what he believes and to befriend whomever he likes.
SEO specialists have reasons to feel offended by what he declared. Search Engine Land, Moz (former SEOmoz), Search Engine Watch, State of Search, SEO.com, Search Engine Roundtable are all whole businesses based on search optimization. Are they all stupider than the three thousand computer scientists working at Google? They are a few, they are certainly less than 50, actually. Following their advice, you can actually beat the machine. He divinizes Google, but Google doesn’t care about me or you. We use SEO to give people the opportunity to read what we write, not to trick the greatest trickster of them all, who is closely followed by Facebook.
With Facebook is another story. If you don’t want to use it, you don’t have to use it, it’s your choice. By using Facebook, you sign an agreement which you don’t read but you agree with and they can do all they consider to do with your personal data.
But by using Google of whom you think it is mainly a search engine, not a marketing, and advertising mastodon, you may not have the common sense to switch to an open sourced search engine, like DuckDuckGo… and you’ll allow yourself to be manipulated. You aren’t asked to sign an agreement authorizing Google to steal and use your data, they just do it because you use their engine to search stuff, right? Wow, it’s free and reliable. Three thousand doctors in computer science work for it, who are you to complain? Like the gentleman who doesn’t want to be your friend, this company clearly and upfront prefers guys (brands, whatever) with a lot of money, they will always rank better than you… I kinda understand the logic, it’s still not fair for you, but you can counterattack using what you know about SEO. If you and X are selling the same things in different locations and potential customers are searching these products online, they won’t find who sells the best, they will find the smartest of you two. If you write and want to sell what you write, you don’t believe this guy… He says that Google bots are so brainy that they just detect the good content. Three thousand computer science doctors work for that, don’t they?
You know what Google finds most? Google bots find your content which was stolen and pasted on a better-optimized blog. A content “curating” website/blog, with the difference that it doesn’t offer credits for what it has copied and published without authors’ permission, by publishing different stolen pieces from different blogs more often than you, has priority in Google’s search results.

Nicely put Daniel! I actually found out about SEO when creating a website that was going to be visited by people visually impaired also. Good SEOs improve the internet in ways people don’t even think about.
