Under the Silver Lake is a weird movie, but it is not unwatchable. On the contrary, it is somehow very esthetic. Andrew Garfield is also very good in this type of role. When I say it’s weird, think at David Lynch adapting a Bret Easton Ellis kind of weird. The difference is that David Robert Mitchell, the filmmaker, actually tries to say something. The topic is not sterile at all.

Under the Silver Lake – Plot
In a world where people don’t necessarily run after fame and celebrity, Sam is a bored bohemian guy. Let’s say he’s good looking enough to be visited by an actress from time to time, just to enjoy pure sex. They don’t go out hand in hand or having dates. He has a nice car, he lives in a nice apartment in a building complex with a pool. He lives in Los Angeles. He goes to parties where almost everybody knows almost everybody. Sam doesn’t seem to be poor, but he is late with the rent. He seems to afford to go to those parties, though.
One day, a very beautiful girl comes by the pool with a tape recorder. Sam is spying on her with his binoculars. The girl, Sarah, has a white dog. In the evening, Sam manages to befriend the dog with a treat, Sarah invites him inside and they smoke some pot. It seemed to be more than one joint. When the atmosphere became appropriate for romance, Sarah’s friends return home, accompanied by a guy in a pirate’s outfit.
When you think that a lot will start to happen in Sam’s life after he met Sarah, everything change. You’ll find out if you have the patience to watch the movie.
Cast
Andrew Garfield is Sam, the main character. All the others are accidental apparitions. Wendy Vanden Heuvel is the “Topless Bird Woman”, Sam’s neighbor. Riley Keough is Sarah, an apparition at the common pool. Riki Lindhome is the actress Sam is fooling around with. Callie Hernandez is Millicent Sevence, a billionaire’s daughter. Topher Grace is a guy Sam met in a bar. He is a voyeur. Zosia Mamet is Troy, a mysterious errand girl. Grace Van Patten is a leggy balloon girl. Jimmi Simpson is Allen, a hipster wearing girl blouses at parties. India Menuez is a complex Star. Patrick Fischler is the Comics Man. Summer Bishil is Sam’s EX, some model.
Written and directed by David Robert Mitchell, it is his third feature film. He also wrote and directed The Myth of the American Sleepover (2010). Here, there is a screening in a park. The screening seems to be a reenacting of his first movie. India Menuez was one of the screening’s stars. Riley Keough is actually Elvis Presley’s granddaughter.
Trailer
Critics say that this is finally a movie by and for straight young men. I liked its weirdness, so I’m not going to dissect its occasional flaws. As I said, it is watchable despite that sometimes it seems it’s losing the scope. Under the Silver Lake is not a disappointment.
