Jojo Rabbit Was in Top 3 Favorites for 2020 Best Picture Awards

February 24, 2020 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

Yes, there is no mistake in the title. Taika Waititi‘s Jojo Rabbit was very close to being this year’s Best Picture. Its main challenger was even more unbelievable because it was the Korean Parasite, the actual winner. Which one was the third, can you guess? It was Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. Sparkles, light, drama, glamour, comedy, not particularly in this order, like these three movies. There is not an established order for the top three. This is what the insiders said. Jojo Rabbit is a wonderful movie, and I hope you will understand that I won’t give you any spoiler, as usual. I also hope you’ll watch it when you’ll get the opportunity.

Jojo Rabbit – Plot

Johannes Betzler is a blond-reddish ten-year-old kid at the end of the Second World War. He lives with his mother, and he is obsessed with Hitler and all things Nazi. Member in Hitler Youth, he is willing to prove himself as a true German soldier. His best friend is imaginary, and it is called Adolf, complete with the half mustache, breeches, and the diagonal of hair. His second best friend is a funny plump boy named Yorki. I have to mention now that Jojo Rabbit is a sort of dark comedy, so, at a training in the woods with the mates in his unit, some senior guys made fun of him because he couldn’t bring himself to kill a small rabbit, just for fun, and for the pleasure of killing.

Cast

Roman Griffin Davis is Jojo “Rabbit”. Thomasin McKenzie is Elsa, a girl. Scarlett Johansson is Rosie, Jojo’s mother. Taika Waititi is Adolf, Jojo’s imaginary friend. Sam Rockwell is Captain Klenzendorf, some Hitlerjugend cell’s commander. Rebel Wilson is Fraulein Rahm, a funny secretary. Alfie Allen is Finkel, a soldier. Stephen Merchant is Deertz, a Gestapo chief. Archie Yates is Yorki, Jojo’s friend.

This wonderful movie is directed and written by the half Jewish half Maori New Zealand-er Taika Waititi. He is the witty director of Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016), and What We Do in the Shadows (2014), to mention just these three. Avengers’ fans were angry with him because one never knows if he made fun only in Thor, or he made fun of the whole franchise. It was a success with over $850M worldwide, so, despite their bickering, he is to continue with the franchise, directing Thor: Love and Thunder, ready in 2021.

Jojo Rabbit is adapted on Christine Leunens’ “Caging Skies”, published in 2008. They both share the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2020.

Trailer

Trailer is very little spoiling. Actually, I’d made a more scarce one. That’s OK, after all.

Critics

Not all critics loved Jojo, some said the movie is too cute and loses focus, others said worse, that it is a blasphemy to make a funny character of the tyrant who killed the Jewish people in the Holocaust. I think they missed the point. Jojo Rabbit is a deep drama gilded with satirically funny replicas, like: “You’re ten, Jojo. Start acting like it.” It has a lot of charge in it, nothing is as light or as superficial as some glossy critics cried around. You will laugh and you will cry.
