The Globes

January 22, 2011 By Daniel Mihai Popescu 1 Comment

I wanted badly to comment the Globes, but I’m letting the specialists to do this, and my thinking will come later, less about the awarding, more about the films. I’ve noticed the grudge against Ricky Gervais from people with nothing to do with the movie industry. One former waitress and actual wife and mother who “personally can’t stand Angelina Jolie” [sic] was feeling bad for her when the comedian joked about the cartoon named The Tourist, with all his 6.o imdb rate.

Here you have the interview Gervais gave to Piers Morgan during this last’s “Tonight Show”, and here you have the full YouTube version of his presentations at the ceremony. How can I forget ? Here is the 2010 video from the 67 ‘th Golden Globes Ceremony , to see that it was not very different in style, so the guys at HFPA were aware of what sort of routine will be presented. Utterly funny, spicy, not vulgar as maybe this criticizing “columnists” would rather enjoyed instead, by not revealing anything close to reality. My opinion on HFPA was never too high, I was very enthusiastic when Slumdog Millionaire won the award for drama, two years ago. But it always smelled bad, when they nominated and sometimes awarded almost irrelevant movies or actors. Of course everyone is in a way or another subjective, it’s not a matter of taste or box-office, as can be a soft spot towards someone you like as a person. The “categories” at Golden Globe are funny indeed. For sample, Barney’s Version this year or Walk the Line a few years ago, aren’t comedies or musicals, are dramas, no matter that in the first acts a comic guy and in the second movie is a lot of Johnny Cash music performed magistrally by Joaquin Phoenix.

I’m mentioning Barney’s Version because of Paul Giamatti’s award for best actor in a comedy/musical.

What was more to pose as squirmed of at Ricky Gervais’ “getting ugly” was the lawsuit thrown on HFPA in the evening of January 11 – less than a week before the Awards Night – by the former Golden Globes’ publicist Michael Russell accusing the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and its president Philip Berk of taking kickbacks, selling media favors, “despicable conduct,” and generally behaving like a hooker when it comes to studios who need nominations for their less than wonderful movies. The lawsuit claims many association members “abuse their positions and engage in unethical and potentially unlawful deals and arrangements”.

Of course, a statement from the guy whose company currently handles the Golden Globes show’s public relations, said the allegations were without merit, but the suicide of a longtime member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is the latest blow to the scandal-plagued organization, even if a spokeswoman says the death of Max B. Miller had nothing to do with his role in the group. In 2005, HFPA member Nick Douglas hanged himself four days before Golden Globe nominations were announced. Douglas had been suspended by the organization after selling a photograph of himself with the actor Tom Selleck to a tabloid newspaper and then lying about it.

To put Jolie with Depp together in a commercial flop[sic], was just an attempt to influence people as the “global warming” was. How to create traffic if not by commenting and blabbing about potential “issues” between this hot actors…
