Pulpit Rock, Norway

December 28, 2012 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

Preikestolen, also known by the English names of Preacher’s Pulpit, or Pulpit Rock, or Preacher’s Rock (only such a thing exists in USA already, on the Georgia portion of the Appalachian Trail), and by a Norwegian local name translated as “the carpenter-plane’s blade”, is a massive cliff of 604 meters above Lysefjorden, in Ryfylke, Norway.
It is one of the coolest places on earth, visited unfortunately by just between a hundred and fifty thousand and two hundred thousand people per year. After a walk of around three kilometers, visitors reach the nearly flat rock surface and approach the edge.

They say there never were accidents, that being the reasons the tourist authorities haven’t put safety railings near the edges. The place is also famous as a suicidal site. Suicidal people came here and jump into the six hundred meters abyss. Sometimes, authorities succeed to stop the suicidal couples. Most of the time they don’t.

The closest city to the site is Stavanger, the fourth largest city in the country, and the county is called Rogaland. Excursions are not recommended during winter and the first month of the spring, the best period being between April till October, you just have to look for flights around this time of the year to Norway so you are not limited to the activities you can do.

Unfortunately I haven’t been there yet, but it will never be too late. I wanted to write about Mumbai, only that magnificent city will be the hero of a future post in this category. I don’t have much more to say without repeating what already was said about the cliff. I have discovered a few amazing pictures on Pinterest and I liked them so much that I decided to tell you about it at once!
