I have waited too long for Burnt to be released after I’ve got noticed of it. Bradley Cooper, a rising star mostly because he’s considered “hot”, continues to be a disappointment for the second time in a row (first time was Aloha), after his Oscar nomination for American Sniper – 2014, which comes after another two, one for Best Actor (Silver Linings Playbook – 2012), and one for best supporting actor (American Hustle – 2013). But, considering that the final goal for the movie production companies is not to entertain (that’s only a claim), it is to make profit, they sometimes don’t think too much to the details. It’s a lot of paperwork to be moved around, so, when you haven’t a credible story, or when you have too much of a story on your hands, you can loose the reins and cut off the wrong part of it.
Burnt is no exception, the real story seems to have happened before the one in the movie. Here, “Chef Adam Jones” starts “fresh” in London, not very long after they show him in a rather filthy New Orleans rat hole, opening, or shucking (as they say), his millionth oyster. The “love story” has consumed in Paris too, before he retreated to New Orleans, before he came to London.

Some Facts About Burnt
The project started in 2013, when John Wells was set to direct a “cooking comedy” film with Bradley Cooper signed to star in the lead, and with Sienna Miller as the female lead. The film was originally titled Chef”, and re-titled Adam Jones” in 2014, because in that year just appeared Jon Favreau‘s film Chef. They announced Lily James in the cast and she appeared only in a cameo, they announced Alicia Vikander and she appeared barely for two or three minutes. Uma Thurman was added to the cast also for another minute or so, and they called Emma Thompson to play a psychologist. I love her in all her movies, except this one.
The movie looses its sense in less than twenty minutes from the start. I was able to loose all my enthusiasm in ten. The screen was taken hold of by Bradley Cooper character’s hysterics. I have waited one year for this movie to be released. I love cooking movies and I don’t necessarily want them to be comedies (like the French Le Chef – 2012 with Jean Reno playing his Michelin stars and acting his aloofness like the genuine Leo he is) or a deep drama (like The Hundred-Foot Journey – 2014, another movie coquetting with the subject of the three Michelin stars), but this one is far from being a comedy, and it is diluting its expecting savory in Hell’s Kitchen like, cheap clichés.

It stars Bradley Cooper as “Adam Jones”, the ambitious rehabilitated chef in his attempt to gain a third Michelin star, Sienna Miller as “Helene” a talent discovered by Adam Jones and coerced to work for him in Tony’s restaurant, Omar Sy as “Michel”, a former team mate in the glorious days of Jones’ in Paris, Daniel Brühl as “Tony”, another friend from Paris, Matthew Rhys as “Reece”, also one member of the Paris team, but in the movie playing some already crowned three stars chef rival, Alicia Vikander as “Anne Marie”, Jones’s former lover and partner in drugs, his Paris’ boss daughter, Uma Thurman as “Simone”, a food critic helper, Emma Thompson as “Dr. Rosshilde”, a psychiatrist with an annoying British accent (exactly like the ones in Mel Brooks’ movies, see Dracula: Dead and Loving It ), Sam Keeley as “David”, another young talent discovered by Jones on the streets and theoretically even willing to pay to work for Jones (The Rolling Stones of cooking), Lily James as “Sara”, David’s bed partner, who said five words, Riccardo Scamarcio as “Max”, another one from Paris, who appeared more than others, but I don’t remember him talking too much. Doesn’t matter anyway.

With all it’s 6.6 imdb rating, my advice is to not waste your time. “Kitchen Confidential” was cancelled after its first season because of rating. Bradley Cooper impersonating Anthony Bourdain was cute, and the show was entertaining. Compared to that, Burnt is not a comedy/drama, is a horror. For the production it was a success, because it made more than the budget.
