Here is the full list of nominees and winners of the 87th Academy Awards, after the ceremony held on February 22nd, 2015. As you will see, no surprises, nothing out of range. Everybody almost expected these particular awards, I have no comments to add. Finally, Mr. Iñárritu has been awarded how he expected himself. With Babel, he just expected, but his expectations and hopes were turned upside down by Mr. Scorsese's friends and supporters. That was a surprise that I liked quite a lot. I remember … [Read more...]
My Grasp on the Oscars 2015
I haven't got the time to watch Selma and Wild, and I'm not going to comment on them yet. Maybe I'll do it another day, long after the Oscars 2015. Not a big deal, I suppose. None of them are big favorites for the Best Picture, and Selma, for sample, doesn't have a nomination on other important categories either. Too bad for them. [source: imdb.com] All in all, it wasn't a spectacular year for Oscars. There is one exception though, The Grand Budapest Hotel, my only full 10 on the whole … [Read more...]
Foxcatcher
Foxcatcher, my friends, is a very dark movie from the beginning. It started very somber, continued in this note and had a terrible finale. I'm not very fond of biographical movies because when you know the persons involved, there is no more surprise. You watch the technique, the play, the talent, maybe. [source for all pictures: imdb.com] Foxcatcher is not nominated for Best Picture this year, but it determined another three important nominations, the Best Actor for Steve Carell, who … [Read more...]
The Imitation Game
The Imitation Game is a 2014 thriller directed by Morten Tyldum, with a screenplay by Graham Moore based on the biography "Alan Turing: The Enigma" by Andrew Hodges. [source of all pictures: imdb.com] The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing, a very apt fellow, who started to work for the British Ministry of War during World War II, leading a team of crypt analysts in the challenge to solve the Enigma code. They have been in the possession of such a specimen and they tried to … [Read more...]
The Theory of Everything
The Theory of Everything is a 2014 British drama film directed by James Marsh. I have to mention from the beginning that I have a feeling for at least one Oscar this time, the Best Actor for Eddie Redmayne. He already got a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and a SAG for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role. Redmayne has a real shot for Best Actor here. His challenger may be Bradley Cooper, but I think Cooper is followed by bad luck this year. He is really close, only Redmayne's role is … [Read more...]
Whiplash
Whiplash is an American drama film written and directed by the young Damien Chazelle, based on his experiences in the Princeton High School Studio Band. The film is about a student jazz drummer who seeks the respect of a fearsome teacher, musician, whatever. The music in this movie is just perfect, and I have a feeling that it justifies its high rates, acclaims and awards. It can be considered a drama. The action is not boring but illogical and puerile here and there. [source of all … [Read more...]
