No matter how happy I was for adding Disqus to power my comments, something very useful with all it’s items and pingback and tracking, also handy when you comment on a blog who uses it as well, along with this cute socializing thumb symbols on the left of the screen, I have had real problems with youtube embed video code. As I said in a previous post, I had to toggle between “visual” and “HTML” when editing, and guess what happened every time I left “HTML”? The video code evaporated. I realy don’t understand how is this happening, because the code seems simple enough, it must be an internal php function inside youtube. I really tried to apply the same procedure with yesterday’s video from Cannes site, the one with the press conference, and it wasn’t possible, simply because it wasn’t expressly allowed by the host, in the already mentioned php function, 🙂
It is not happening with the videos I borrow from other sites, like the one for today, an “extra” for The Landlord, an inside view of what was shown in The comical design. It’s not happening with the videos taken from the Romanian TV Channel Pro TV, the code looks also clean. It seems all the functions are in the code, not only in the site construction. The only pity with this videos from Pro TV, presented in this post, is that they may be removed any time now, for loosing the sense of novelty, and the imminent starting of a new season. You may enjoy them, the kids got real talent.
[update October 2015: Indeed they removed the videos, so I’ve tried to replace them with youtube videos, which works now better than ever :). WordPress itself improved to unimaginable heights, it’s almost a “no-limits” platform, so everything is possible. These said, the post remained just for the archives, it lost its point.]
But first, have a look at this cute girl called April.
What to do with youtube, when it seems you can’t find the desired videos somewhere else, is to copy the code on a notebook file and have it handy, in case you need editing, otherwise it is getting really difficult. Actually, when this first happened with me, I was sure it was a problem with all the videos wherever from, one takes them. I had a little leprechaun behind my back whispering inaudibly in my ear “it’s youtube, it’s youtube”, but I had doubts and I avoided to put videos in posts. Anyway, if there is another possibility to arrange the code in other ways in order to fix it, meaning by that to stick it in your post, I’m really open to it.
Until then, youtube remains the black sheep on the net, which is a shame, there is a lot of money there, and they want to invest more in things I’m not commenting right now, being out of the subject. This happenings are disorienting for the amateur, pushing him to not ever pursue his dreams of having a site of his own, without the money to pay a designer. For me this is lack of spinal cord. It’s the same with guys who never saw a computer, it comes not naturally to handle it, even by watching stuff on the net, and nothing more. I’ve seen a lame movie, actually I remember more than one movie where this very thing happened. A guy clicked on his girlfriend laptop’s keyboard, she was just coming out from the shower, and the guy, suddenly scared said that something is happening on the screen, and the girl started screaming: “You loose all my data!” and the filmmakers show us a pre-Windows (or desktop publishing Aldus PageMaker) screen with green lines on black background, evaporating in rapid motion, and the girl starts typing fast and faster and types and than types some more and finally says: “I’m done, I saved it, :)”. This was obviously in the director’s mind on how it looks to “maneuver” a computer, as it was going to explode or something, if you don’t touch it “right”, or you don’t know what you’re doing.
Youtube code is doing like this kitten when you toggle, so never forget to save it somewhere on the desktop, and when updating the post, check first if the code is still there, after that hit the “publish” button. Anyway, if you don’t lack the courage, better start to manage your self hosted site, you may check Hostgator, or DreamHost, or InMotion, or BlueHost for that. It’s affordable and it is with full service. What you don’t know, you just ask in a chat, the technical team at all these hosting companies, is there to help you, without hooks. I recently went to the bank to open a new account, with my girlfriend. The clerk was trying to push any possible hook in the market to sell every possible service they had, it was obnoxious. It was so simple what we wanted, to be solved in maximum ten minutes, but it just wasn’t possible. I swear to you that this is not going to happen if you choose a host package. Nobody from the above mentioned companies will try to pressure you with calls and emails after emails of what “good” new services are now available for just $1.99 more or $3.99 more and with “up to $19.99 per month” you can make this or that more. Unlimited band width, unlimited domains and unlimited email addresses are available for just a few dollars per month, between six to nine, depending on your choices. The most important thing now, is to choose wise between the platforms to power your future site. If the chosen one is WordPress, you won the lottery! Buy Genesis Framework and empower your blog or site or whatever wonderful project you develop on the web!
