Rarely I felt the urge to repeat myself so much, but this one is an important matter. I like this blog to offer unique views on ordinary things, but the logical views are common sense. So the uniqueness is impossible for this matter. I can create unique posts, and I’ll be proud of them after that, when someone mentions something valuable taken from this blog. But it is impossible to be unique when you urge a serious blog writer to make this service to humanity from his or her’s owned domain, and not from Blogger or other free platform.
I’m repeating myself again, and I repeat what others are saying that on a free blog, you have just what you haven’t payed for, a relatively free “service”. If some marketing guru says that for blogging exist “free platforms”, and even free blogging software, you’ll be rich in no time, just give him a couple of hundreds dollars to show you how, you’re (pardon me) just naive, to not say something stronger. I have been saying that getting your own domain name is a must for a long time, but many people don’t quite understand, so let’s talk about it once again. More specifically, let’s list five of the main reasons why having and hosting your own domain is important.
1. You don’t really own your Blogger blog.
If you read Blogger’s Terms of Service, you’ll discover that you don’t really own the blog. You do own the content you’ll write there, but the domain and the platform are properties of Google. The first consequence of this is that if you violate or some administrator think you violate any of their service policies your account might get suspended and you’ll lose your hard work (or not very hard, as may be for the great majority of you there). Another consequence is that you won’t be able to sell your blog, should it become popular and maybe profitable one day (This is a joke! It’ll never happen on Blogger).
2. Having your own domain gives you weight and credibility.
Since Blogger is a free platform, you’ll find all sorts of blogs there. Sure, there are some good ones, but the majority is low quality, and you’ll have a lot of spam blogs that are created just to manipulate search engines, too. As a result most people get suspicious as soon as they see the .blogspot on your domain name. I am not suspicious, I think just that you’re afraid to assume your own blog, I think you are afraid to assume the promotion of your blog. That is why having your own domain will give you if not an immediate dose of credibility to your site, an appreciation of your effort.
3. Hosting your own domain gives you more flexibility.
When you host your own domain name you’ll have complete control regarding the software and the setup that will be used there. You’ll be able to use simple HTML pages, to load a module platform like WordPress, to add special scripts and so on. As your blog grows you’ll find that this flexibility is vital, as it allows you to expand the scope of your site and generate more traffic and why not, more money.
4. If you have your own domain, the only one responsible for your publishing flaws, will be you and only you, so you have no one to blame, but everything you do is perfectible.
It is not hard to imagine how frustrating are the bugs and other modifications your free host is doing for everybody, for a simplified platform or whatever. Trying to upload multiple photos, and changing the font or it’s characteristics, being sure you got it and when pushing the “publish” button, you’ll see no changes. Oh, and everything can become better!
5. It’ll save your reputation!
Can you imagine Paulo Coelho on Blogger?

Hi Rodolfo–I absolutely love what you have done with the Genesis theme. Before I launched my own print magazine, I served as an adviser to three university publications, including a student-run online magazine. The students and I searched high and low for a theme we could customize into something that looked as professional as one of the big national news sites. I wish we had found this one! Your site looks fantastic.

It’s an extreme waste if another site is hosting your blog, if you’re serious about blogging. Hosting a domain is essential for a serious blogger.
