This is the title of one of the good movies released in 2008, the best year of the millennium in cinema. Being a Guy Ritchie movie, maybe its place is in The Shadows, but there is all the time in the world to put him in one or two articles in that “under the stream” category. Not little was my awe that something is too fishy with Mr. Ritchie. There is a pattern in his art, something captivating and paralyzing at the same time. No doubt, he knows well to use symbols. I have seen this movie recently, after Sherlock Holmes. If I had good things to say about Guy Ritchie, they were because of Snatch, a creation which showed the wonderful abilities of Brad Pitt as an actor. He acted himself there too, but with great talent.
I appreciated Ritchie also for his nasty style sometimes, weird, vulgar and artistic. Full of bad symbols as a satanic or worse, more satanic ceremonies at the same time. One doesn’t need just a reversed pentagram to show mind control tricks. It is a lot of misdirection used for all that. A good plethora of actors, as usual, with their specific types, made specifically on the 100% working recipe. It is called a story of sex, thugs and rock n’ roll.
The tagline captivates already, he used at least two keywords in three. The “Spartan” Gerald Butler, Tom Wilkinson, an actor with less time remained to a full Oscar award as anybody will expect, Thandie Newton, the Mission Impossible 2 “the hell you’re beautiful” and Crash, the Oscar, of course, the chameleon Mark Strong (I wander how he got the time to act in so many movies in one year), Idris Elba (they needed the black in this one) and some revelation, Toby Kebbell who will play the sequel to this movie, The Real RocknRolla. I saw him in Bruckheimer’s The Sorcerer’s Aprentice, brilliant actually. But I’ll talk about Jerry Bruckheimer’s movie in another post. It’s too freakish to not put it a little on the spot :).
Guy Ritchie was invited to the Royal Wedding, where even Obama wasn’t. And a lot of not very orthodox things are related with him, as the supposition of having been one of Madonna’s handlers, as in “Project Monarch” handlers, or filming some scenes of the first Holmes in the United Grand Lodge of England’s London headquarters. Otherwise, a very talented director, almost a British Tarantino.
The difference between him and Quentin Tarantino, aside the different background, is mostly the lack of political edge at the American, and the hyper-realistical situation Ritchie is throwing the viewer almost from the start, otherwise both are “mind blowing” creators. For some spectators to their theater, this is not good at all. But let’s give the art it’s right to express itself as it’s propper!
RocknRolla, a movie by Guy Ritchie, 7.3 imdb (there are much valuable movies ranked less than this), a 2008 release, 114′, “Action, Crime, Thriller”. There has been a sex scene as well there, not quite classical, because of a throat infection Butler got previously. Ha, ha, let’s lol. Almost forgot to mention two “stand in’s” or “extras”, Jeremy Piven and Ludacris as “Chris Bridges”; with or without them… [all caption used, are from imdb]

Not a great film, but a good one, Rocknrolla adds a fun card to Guy Ritchie’s deck; and offers intriguing options for him to return to in the future.
