Romantic Drama

July 5, 2012 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

Yesterday, after seeing a very bad romance (a pity for Anne Hathaway, very talented and very good even in this soap), I remembered My Sassy Girl with Elisha Cuthbert and Jesse Bradford, a romantic drama which went deeper than expected. Usually these are not my kind of films, but a good movie, a real good one, touches me. Of course sometimes it depends on my moods, and I think that is happening with all of you. Our moods define our tastes, if they aren’t major ones. On such a trivial subject as movies, romantic comedies or dramas, whatever. People usually don’t take movies seriously, but they are art forms made for different purposes, and it’s not easy nor cheap to make them to go to the target. So, after almost two hours of a very bad romance drama, bad because of the remarkable Jim Sturgess’ lack of talent, and the lame screenplay. As I said, I underline that Hathaway is good and no matter the screenplay she scores anyway.

The market is full of romantic comedies, and full of drama, but both genres are not so often produced, or at least are not the sort of films keeping my attention busy. All the blurbs about “romantic drama”, not my favorite movie genre are an introduction to a film I saw a few years ago, two maybe, and my wishing to drown the bad memories of One Day, the Lone Sherfig’s one from yesterday. Not a curiosity anymore, this one has a better imdb rating, 6.7 compared with the one of My Sassy Girl, just a 6. This may be a sign of my incompatibility with the modern public and the commercialization of “non-valuable” products. A mistake actually, because if they are commercialized and make money, they are far from being “non-valuable”.

Jim Sturgess

I feel rather antipathy for Sturgess, so I’m very subjective. Not a big fan of Jesse Bradford either, I think he’s less disturbing than Sturgess pulling a “Ryan Reynolds”, with the lack of humor of a Capricorn (I know he isn’t, he’s a Taurus, but it’s just the way it looks). Sturgess was almost good in 21, in Kevin Spacey’s shadow, along Kate Bosworth, Laurence Fishburne, Sam Golzari and other talents. Please Capricorns, don’t take it seriously, Rowan Atkinson is one of yours, an incredible mutation :). Oh, and this is exclusively available to males. Females may have humor more freely, Julia Louis-Dreyfus is an example of what I’m talking :). The art of making a romance movie, be it a drama or a comedy, is still to be mastered by the creators of One Day. If this looks as an homage to the featured actor, it isn’t. It’s just a rant.
