Elite Squad 2

August 14, 2012 By Daniel Mihai Popescu 1 Comment

Elite Squad 2 (Portuguese: Tropa de Elite 2 – O Inimigo Agora é Outro; literal: Elite Troop 2: Now the Enemy Is Another One) is a 2010 Brazilian film directed and produced by José Padilha, starring Wagner Moura. The other actors appeared somehow in the other film as well, some are new here. It is a sequel of the 2007 movie The Elite Squad. Elite Squad: The Enemy Within is a continuation of the semi-fictional account of the BOPE (Portuguese: Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais), the Special Police Operations Battalion of the Rio de Janeiro Military Police, with a focus on the relationship between law enforcement and politics. The film was released in Brazil on October 8, 2010.

I really don’t want any spoilers in my posts, especially because I don’t like them, and I never read reviews before seeing a movie. I guide after director, actors, writers and producers. No Rotten Tomatoes, no other disturbances. It’s safer, and if the movie doesn’t say me anything in the first quarter of hour, I leave the theater, or I eject the DVD, it’s that simple, because I think that a movie that starts badly, even if it continues better, is not worthy of my time. I’m quite sure I’m not going to loose anything precious by doing this.

Elite Squad 2 – Seu Jorge

This is a special guest star, Seu Jorge, the famous Mané Galinha (Knockout Ned) from one of the best Brazilian movies of all times (at least taking the imdb rate), Cidade de Deus (City of God). He was born and raised in the favelas of Rio like the characters in Cidade de Deus. His album “Samba Esporte Fino” became the 1999 album of the year in Brazil. His musical talents adorn the soundtrack for “The Life Aquatic” with covers of David Bowie songs Rebel Rebel, Starman and many other innovative tracks. I took the info from imdb, my main source of movie news. I use Empire as well, sometimes, I’m subscribed to them in Google Reader.

Having enjoyed public and critical acclaim, Elite Squad: The Enemy Within is the all-time largest box office ticket seller and highest-grossing film in Brazil, ahead of Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands and Avatar, respectively. The film was selected as the Brazilian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards, but it did not make the final shortlist, which is a real pity, even if the winner was A Separation (Iran) in Persian, a movie by Asghar Farhadi. Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands (Portuguese: Dona Flor e Seus Dois Maridos) is a 1976 comedy film directed by Bruno Barreto, and based on the novel of the same name by Jorge Amado, the author of Tenda dos Milagres (Tent of Miracles, 1969), which was later adapted to a 1977 Nouvelle Vague film by director/screenplay writer Nelson Pereira dos Santos, and a 1985 TV miniseries in 30 episodes.

Elite Squad 2 – Wagner Moura

I plan to review Cidade de Deus in the future. Anyway, here, in this 8.1 imdb rated movie, appeared this new character Diogo Fraga, acted by Irandhir Santos, a main one. This time, the movie’s action center to the politics and Brazil’s entrails, more than simple minded action.

The guy is real good, this director, José Padilha. The same is available with the actors, and generally with the whole production team. I saw this movie for the first time, in the imdb Top 250. It disappeared from the list. Nonsensical Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) has a place there, for the over 300k votes received.

Violent, raw, psychological, this is one of the best movie ever made. I have to recognize my special bond with Brazilian movies and Mira Nair‘s, the revolutionary director of Indian origins. Subjective or not, they are really good.
