Mel Gibson

November 25, 2012 By Daniel Mihai Popescu 2 Comments

Poor Mel Gibson! They say he’s an alcoholic, they say he’s violent, they say he’s a lot of things that don’t define him. He’s talented, he used to be very good looking, he had a vision. He is a good actor, strangely. He has funny names. Born in the state of New York in 1956, from an Irish mother (née Reilly), and an Australian of an Irish descent, he was baptized Mel Colm-Cille Gerard Gibson. “Mel” and “Colm-Cille” are Irish saints names. He has another ten brothers, and when he was twelve, his father moved camp in Australia, somewhere near Sidney. He co-stared Piper Laurie (Paul Newman’s sweetheart in The Hustler) in a movie called Tim, which brought him the Australian Film Institute Award: Best Actor in a Lead Role in 1979. This is the Australian Oscar. Doesn’t matter, not even the “British Oscar” is to be extremely important. Only the American Oscar, where Academy Members like Beyoncé and Natalie Portman cast their votes for “acting”.

Being born when he was born (on January 3’rd), “he has a very basic sense of humor. It’s a bit lavatorial and not very sophisticated”, as Helena Bonham Carter said. They starred together in Hamlet. He is the first ever “Sexiest Man Alive”, as he was called in 1985 by People Magazine. Only after that year, the people were given the opportunity to vote for guys like Matt Damon or Bradley Cooper in this poll position. We know him as an Australian from Mad Max, Peter Weir‘s Gallipoli, and The Year of Living Dangerously (directed by the same Peter Weir). In 1984, he made his American debut in The Bounty. After that, he crushed with the Lethal Weapon series, and everybody knew exactly who Mel Gibson is. Hamlet, Forever Young, The Man Without a Face brought him some critical acclaims. He was proposed the role of Wallace in Braveheart. He wanted just to direct the movie, if possible. It wasn’t. They offered him this chance, only with the condition of also acting in the movie. The result was over expected: Best Movie and Best Directing Academy Awards. His career continued with box-office explosions like The Patriot, Ransom and Payback.

He is an international superstar. He is a good Real Estate investor. He and his wife until 2011, Robyn, were known as philanthropists. After Braveheart, Gibson directed, produced, and co-wrote The Passion of the Christ, a film shot in Aramaic, Latin and Hebrew. Morgenstern, means “Morning Star” in German, a title of the Virgin Mary. Mel Gibson, the devout Traditionalist Catholic, thought this of great significance when casting Maia Morgenstern, a devout Jew. In interviews, she has defended The Passion against allegations of antisemitism, saying that the high priest Caiaphas is portrayed not as a representative of the Jewish people, but as a leader of the establishment, adding that “Authorities throughout history have persecuted individuals with revolutionary ideas”. She always referred to Gibson as “Mister Mel Gibson”.

Mel Gibson pulled out for over-speed under alcoholic influence

C’moooon!

In 2006 he had been pulled over the road, for passing the speed limit in LA County. He had a bottle of Tequila within reach. And then he spoke: “F—— Jews, the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world. Are you a Jew?” The deputy sheriff who stopped him quite was. The words surrounded the world and they have been correlated with an allegedly antisemitism. Prominent members of the entertainment and Jewish communities have denounced the remarks, among them powerful agent Ari Emanuel (of Creative Artists), who urged his peers to “professionally shun” Gibson, and Barbara Walters (the famous personalities interviewer), who announced that she would no longer see his films. His Apocalypto had difficulties because of this very words. He, allegedly, is also a racist, a homophobic, and an alcoholic with a history of domestic violence. His former wife, Robyn, whom with he has seven kids, dismissed such allegations, filling a court statement declaring the contrary. Homophobia was attributed by the Gay Alliance, because of Prince of Wales’ depiction as an effeminate homosexual in Braveheart. He made some “hot” statements which haven’t brought him the sympathy of the rulers. He called President Bill Clinton a “low-level opportunist” with someone “telling him what to do” all the time, he called the Rhodes scholars who wanted to strive for a new world order, “campaigners for Marxism”, he is against priesthood for women, he publicly spoke out against taxpayer-funded embryonic stem-cell research, he questioned the Iraq War, he was wrongly accused by the funny Michael Moore of being a top Republican puppet for reasons too trivial to be largely exposed here (Gibson’s company sold the rights to produce Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 to Miramax), even if he said that the bunch of head hunters from his Apocalypto reminds him of “President Bush and his guys”. “It’s a very scary arena to be in, but I do vote. I go in there and pull the lever. It’s kind of like pulling the lever and watching the trap door fall out from beneath you. Why should we trust any of these people? None of them ever deliver on anything. It’s always disappointing”. That’s what he declared in 2011. He is longtime friends Whoopi Goldberg and Jodie Foster, both of whom had spoken publicly in his defense.

In Forever Young, because of his eyes, they couldn’t make him to look really old, so they used grey contact lens. I still like Mel Gibson, he’s one of a kind. I mentioned him in an earlier article this year, and I suggest you to go find the whole filmography and on imdb, for a proper documentation. The other sources are just trivia, some with more or less significance than the others. He apologized to the Jews, and to the homosexuals saying he was a little bit upset and drinking, not knowing what he was saying. I think he payed enough. I wonder who am I going to present here if I don’t like him or her? Who you want to be next?

Well written article on Mel Gibson. He’s the man that everyone likes to hate. Mel Gibson has proven how talented he is, but he needs to learn to keep quiet on some of his radical beliefs. I’ll still go see any film that he’s in or directs because of his talent.
