The movie tries to remind the viewer of some absolutely brilliant combination between Quentin Tarantino’s witty speech and Guy Richie’s characters; cockney flavor. It is not. I have been extremely disappointed. It has a good part though, who came almost unexpected: the debut of a former model from Romania, Madalina Diana Ghenea. Not a big role, but representative. So, that was the best part of this very advertised joke of a film.
Jude Law, is a good actor who sometimes go further in expressing himself, his cockiness, like the absurd character he played here. Richard E. Grant is an associate, someone reminding you of Christopher Walken’s character in Stand Up Guys. Demian Bichir is a patron, Madalina Diana Ghenea is his mistress, future wife, whatever, has a very decorative role without being vulgar, on the contrary, nothing can surpass “Dom Hemingway’s nonsensical obscenities during all the ninety minutes of film. Kerry Condon, from the acclaimed Rome is as good as it gets, she’s forgettable in the role because she almost doesn’t have it, it’s a filling. Emilia Clarke, is a little bit more present as a feminine character, she is Dom Hemingway’s daughter.
This is a group picture they made at the launching event. Mădălina Ghenea became relevant because she had an adventure with Leonardo Di Caprio, and kept herself like that by going to have a longer relationship with another Scorpio, Richard Buttler. She appeared in a featured role in the Italian TV Series, Borgia. It’s normal, she is based in Milan, Italy, a place for all good things to happen, almost as good as Istanbul.
Jude Law acts fine and exaggerates in everything, and by making an obnoxious character out of Dominic Hemingway (he mixes accents sometimes when pronouncing his name, it scratched my ears), and it’s not his fault the screenplay was so poor. I’ll tell more about Jude Law in other reviews.
I totally respect the Mexican actor Demian Bichir, he is an Oscar nominee for A Better Life (2011), outwitted unintentionally by the French Jean Dujardin, for his act in The Artist.
Emilia Clarke has a little more than a simple apparition, like Ghenea, only she is already famous for her role in The Game of Thrones, as Condon is known for her antics in Rome.
I really want to say more about it, but I don’t know what. I can improvise, though, or tell you what’s happening, so you are going again to save some time not watching it. All in all, I didn’t like it, and that’s definitive. For your eyes only, I haven’t seen a masterpiece in a long time, maybe in more than a month, since Barry Lyndon.
Dom Hemingway is a “comedy noire” released in 2013, written and directed by Richard Shepard, with an exaggerate rating of 6.2 on imdb, 93 minutes.
Above you have the trailer, which is better than everything you can see in the movie.
