Top 100 imdb is something I really try every year to publish here, on Rodolfo Grimaldi Blog, and I’m very happy when that’s possible. I hope you don’t mind if some of the stars who aren’t for the first time present in the top, have the same old picture, or that other stars have no picture at all. Actually, this post is more of a list with my own comments. I assure you it’s not the easiest kind of article to do.
Top 100 imdb 2016
1. Margot Robbie
[source of all pictures: imdb.com]
The Aussie who reached the fame after The Wolf of Wall Street, now made the first position especially for her cameo in The Big Short and Marvel’s Suicide Squad. Of course, we have to keep in mind Whiskey Tango Foxtrot and The Legend of Tarzan. She’s better and better, you can bet.
2. Emilia Clarke
She’s in the top again because of “Game of Thrones”, but you met her in Dom Hemingway as well. Not relevant for this top, of course.
3. Millie Bobby Brown
She’s a kid born in Spain to British parents. I don’t know her yet, because she appeared mostly in TV shows I’m not watching for the moment. Bad for me I guess.
4. Tom Hardy
Tom Hardy is constantly in top 10, even Top 5, I may say. With two memorable apparitions in The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road, he is very close to an Academy Award, if not several.
5. Morena Baccarin
Morena Baccarin is the Brazilian who stole Deadpool‘s heart and made a stormy appearance in Spy (2015). She’s the woman star in “Gotham”.
6. Gal Gadot
The Israeli actress broke Hollywood in 2016 with three hits: Keeping Up with the Joneses, Criminal, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Very exotic appearance, very good agents I suppose.
7. Alicia Vikander
After Ex Machina, Alicia Vikander is everywhere. An admirable presence in actual movie world, she consolidates her place in whatever movie she plays. This past year she appeared in Jason Bourne and The Light Between Oceans.
8. Daisy Ridley
Like Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley has been propulsed to stardom by Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. That’s it. She borrowed her voice for the video game this year. She ended filming for Episode VIII, you know?
9. Haley Bennett
She played in movies I haven’t watched yet. Sorry. I’ll update when necessary if I won’t forget.
10. Leonardo DiCaprio
Leo finally won the Oscar this year, he met UN President Ban Ki Moon, he is an environmentalist who uses his position to improve the world we live even in a materialistic way.
11. Felicity Jones
Collide – an action thriller, A Monster Calls – a fantasy, Inferno – A Dan Brown’s Robert Langdon adaptation, Rogue One – A Star Wars story, enough to push the Oscar nudging young British here, on the 11’th place.
12. Chloë Grace Moretz
Young and incredible sweet, Kick-Ass actress made two box office hits in 2016, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and The 5th Wave, an apocalyptic SF. Not very good though, but even so, more entertaining than the last Star Trek.
13. Alexandra Daddario
She made the top whatever she plays in, that’s fame for you. San Andreas last year, a lot of TV shows all the time, she can’t miss popularity. Also, she just finished filming the 2017 comedy Baywatch, near Dwayne Johnson.
14. Tom Holland
I don’t know him but he was this year in three movies at least, one of them Captain America: Civil War.
15. Amber Heard
Amber Heard is here mostly because her turbulent breakout from this year less famous (according to this top, of course) Johnny Depp. Her last appearance I remember of, was in The Danish Girl, in 2015.
16. Jennifer Lawrence
Oscar awarded, Jennifer “down to earth” “girl next door” Lawrence can’t miss the top no matter what she did during the year.
17. Sebastian Stan
He is here because Captain America: The First Avenger. I know him from The Covenant and others I don’t remember right now. He was born in Constanța, Romania.
18. Sophie Turner
Sophie Turner is here for “Game of Thrones”, but she made significant appearances in X-Men:Apocalypse and Barely Lethal as well.
19. Henry Cavill
No matter what others say, Henry Cavill is the Man of Steel. He appeared this past year in Batman v. Superman opposing Ben Affleck, though making this position.
20. Natalia Dyer
Unfortunately I don’t know her yet.
21. Brie Larson
Room was the breakthrough for this young actress from Sacramento. What have put her on this place may be the agitation around her appearance in the next Avengers movie, and Free Fire, something to be launched soon.
22. Evan Rachel Wood
One of my favorite actresses in spite being so young. She was 18 in Pretty Persuasion and she was brilliant. She made the top now, for the TV show, “Westworld”. She’s also nominated for a Golden Globe.
23. Ryan Reynolds
He is here for the wrong reasons: Deadpool. Good for him, anyway, because I really like him. He’s entertaining without being annoying.
24. Jared Leto
Requiem for a Dream seems to have stick as Jared Leto’s most famous film. But he is also a musician, and won an Oscar for a really outstanding role he made in Dallas Buyers Club (2013). He’s here for Suicide Squad, obviously.
25. Adam Driver
Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, made Adam Driver an overnight star. If you search him on imdb, after “Adam”, the first suggestion is his profile, not Adam Sandler. That’s fame in this world. Now, he stars in Jim Jarmush‘s Patterson. They called him to host SNL for that and was better than more other coleagues. He also played in Midnight Special, but that movie is not very good.
26. Alexander Skarsgård
I don’t know him, because I haven’t watched “True Blood”, but he played in Zoolander, even for a few minutes, and that’s fine.
27. Sam Claflin
He was in The Riot Club, but I don’t remember him. The movie was relevant. Sick!
28. Jeffrey Dean Morgan
Jeffrey Dean Morgan has been featured here, on this blog, in The Losers (2010). In this top he is because of “The Walking Dead”.
29. Elizabeth Olsen
New member in Marvel’s Avengers franchise, she seems to be in full blast. I have noticed her some time ago in a creepy movie, Martha Marcy May Marlene. Brrr…
30. Natalie Dormer
I have noticed Natalie Dormer as Anne Boleyn in “The Tudors”. Now she’s hot again in the “Game of Thrones”. She appeared in Flawless, movie she made in parallel with “The Tudors”, and she appeared in Casanova.
31. Eva Green
From Bernardo Bertolucci, through Ridley Scott and Robert Rodriguez, to Tim Burton, she is a recognizable face in modern cinema.
32. Mary Elizabeth Winstead
She played mostly television, but she also stared in 10 Cloverfield Lane in 2016.
33. Blake Lively
Blake Lively seems to be less ferocious than Scarlett Johansson. What they have in common has a superior position in this top, right now.
34. Tom Hiddleston
Only Lovers Left Alive and Crimson Peak are some of this young British most remarkable movies. Of course he made this top for something more trivial, but much better paid: some Avengers stuff.
35. Sofia Boutella
An exotic apparition in Kingsman: The Secret Service. Another one even more exotic, in this comedy written by Simon Peg and directed by a Chinese, Star Treck Beyond. Was it part of the franchise? I still wonder.
36. Olivia Munn
She appeared in a few movies in 2016, the most advertised being Office Christmas Party.
37. Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson can be quite good sometimes. It’s not a favorite of mine though, but she gained a top ten position before, mostly because of her extra professional activities. Marriage, leaked photographs, etc…
38. Emma Watson
As long as people will watch Harry Potter movies, she will be present in this top, sometimes in an even higher position.
39. Cara Delevingne
I know she’s a model, I know she’s bisexual, and I noticed her in Paper Towns. She made the top because of Suicide Squad, for sure.
40. Prince
Poor Prince. I have written more of him in the linked article. Otherwise, he made the top because of his death, as happens with every one in that situation. People were furiously searching the internet, including imdb, so the “hits” number increased, and he made the “popularity “top.
41. Marion Cotillard
Marion Cotillard appeared in Alied near Brad Pitt (another star in this top). She’s a favorite of mine.
42. Kate McKinnon
Kate McKinnon is maybe the biggest female asset Saturday Night Live has acquired since Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph ended their contracts. Unfortunately, if both Wiig and Rudolph are at their best acting in proper movies, McKinnon seems to be very uninspired. I don’t know if it’s the acting, the role or the screenplay. Looks like sabotage to me.
43. Travis Fimmel
The Warcraft hero.
44. Winona Ryder
TV all around for Ben Elton’s erotic obsession (read “Inconceivable”). She’s almost legendary.
45. Anton Yelchin
Anton Yelchin is here because he’s dead. I have recently watched Star Trek Beyond and I saw the whole movie as a parody. I have dedicated a review on his memory, 5 to 7.
46. Alan Rickman
Alan Rickman was more than Severus Snape, he was brilliant in Love Actually and many more. He is dead now.
47. Gina Carano
She was in Deadpool.
48. Lori Petty
I thought first that I don’t know her, but I remember some remarkable role she did in Clubland. I suppose she’s here now for “Orange is the New Black”.
49. Paula Patton
She appeared on the big scene in Deja Vu. I don’t remember her from other role after that until Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011). I think she made this top now, because of Warcraft.
50. Teresa Palmer
I liked Warm Bodies, and I like her acting whenever I notice.
51. Melissa Benoist
I only remember her scarce appearance in Whiplash.
52. Shailene Woodley
Snowden, Allegiant, Allegiant the game, a lot of stuff, but not quite high quality. She’s good, though, I like her.
53. Carice van Houten
Carice is another “Game of Trones” star. I read she was in Repo Men, but I don’t remember her right now. She also appeared in The Fifth Estate.
54. Aaron Tveit
For me, absolutely unknown. There is time enough, I suppose.
55. Alicia Witt
“The Sopranos”, 88 Minutes with Al Pacino, Vanilla Sky. I don’t remember her in “Two and a Half Men”. I don’t watch her now.
56. Emily Blunt
After shining in The Devil Wears Prada, she made big steps every minute. I have been impressed by Sicario, and I like her almost everywhere. Nobody’s perfect.
57. Alexis Arquette
He/she died this year. Former brother of Patricia and Rosanna Arquette. When he became transgender,”she” hasn’t need to change her surname like Bruce Jenner.
58. Gene Wilder
Unfortunately, Gene Wilder is here just because he died. Otherwise, everybody knows that he is one of the most significant comedians of the last century.
59. Emily Ratajkowski
I didn’t know she became an actress, anyway, for her cameo in the acclaimed farce of a movie, Gone Girl, she was remarkable.
60. Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp will make this top no matter what. I believe he’s so low this year because he was violent in his relationship with Amber Heard. He plays every year in something.
61. Ben Affleck
I have just reviewed The Accountant, but Affleck was in Live by Night and in Batman v. Superman too. I’m glad he made Top 100 imdb 2016.
62. Sam Heughan
Nothing to say yet. Not me, I mean.
63. Bryce Dallas Howard
She stars in Gold, with Matthew McConaughey.
64. Jennifer Jason Leigh
I don’t know what she’s doing here. I like her, but she’s sort of old news despite her Oscar for doing freaky stuff in a Tarantino creepy movie.
65. Julianne Hough
————-
66. Chris Evans
Chris Evans is Captain America. It’s enough. I’m confused he’s so low this year. Not bad in other movies, he’s very body conscious.
67. Brad Pitt
Brad Pitt haven’t slept yet with the nanny, but he slept around. His marriage seems broken. Lot of waves around all that.
68. Gaten Matarazzo
————
69. Linda Cardellini
Television, “Bloodlines”, I don’t watch.
70. Robin Wright
Robin Wright is in “House of Cards”, the political TV drama series.
71. Megan Fox
She is in TV too, “The New Girl”, but also in a much advertised Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.
72. Amy Adams
Nocturnal Animals, Arrival, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, are only a few names of her lately projects. I don’t know what she’s doing in such a low place in this top.
73. Ana de Armas
I meet this girl everywhere, not really knowing what’s about her. I’ll watch Hands of Stone when I’ll can, but I do not remember her at all in War Dogs.
74. Kate Beckinsale
Underworld: Blood Wars, The Disappointments Room, Love & Friendship are her three movies in 2016. Two horrors and a romantic comedy.
75. Rachel McAdams
Doctor Strange and Spotlight keep this talented Canadian on top. She’s good, whatever.
76. Anna Kendrick
The Accountant, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, Get a Job, The Hollars, four movies in one year, not bad at all. The Accountant is already reviewed, I wonder if I’ll have enough time to watch the other three.
77. Rebecca Ferguson
She came forcibly in the arena with the Chinese sponsored Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation in 2015, and now she played again in Hollywood, in two movies.
78. Jason Momoa
This new Conan appeared enough to make the top.
79. Katheryn Winnick
She is another television actress I know nothing about.
80. Lena Headey
Classy Lena Headey is in “Game of Thrones”.
81. Brianna Hildebrand
She’s rising, she was in Deadpool.
82. Renée Zellweger
A third installment to Helen Fielding’s work, Bridget Jones Diary, pushed the Oscar awarded Zellweger on this top from whatever deepnes she found herself before that.
83. Gillian Anderson
“American Gods”, “The Fall”, “The X-Files”, plus some movie work, there’s a lot to talk about Gillian Anderson in 2017 as well.
84. Oscar Isaac
Present in the money making movies last year.
85. Rami Malek
I know his face, but I don’t remember really watching him.
86. Saoirse Ronan
Saoirse Ronan is on the cards. She has her place kept for 2017 and 2018. You’ll see.
87. Quentin Tarantino
Tarantino keeps himself busy with some refurbished work. If he would come with something original, he’ll be in top ten. Unfortunately, nothing he makes is original.
88. Lily James
Cinderella has been very busy last year, look for yourself.
89. Lauren Cohan
Another “Walking Dead” actress I don’t know much about, because I’ve watched her only in Batman v. Superman, as far as I remember.
90. Wagner Moura
One of my favorite actors. Featured here in Tropa de Elite and Elite Squad: The Enemy Within. Check him out!
91. Hayley Atwell
After Woody Allen featured her in Cassandra’s Dream, her career went to new heights. She’s now everywhere.
92. Kate Mara
She’s in “House of Cards” and she’s also Rooney Mara’s sister.
93. Dakota Johnson
Dakota Johnson worked at the second book from you know what series. I like her.
94. Kit Harington
“Game of Thrones”…
95. Tom Cruise
Jack Reacher. I liked it. I haven’t watched yet the second one, but I bet it will be good. Tom Cruise is very good. I haven’t been so high about Last Samurai, but that’s personal. I liked (and I still consider it’s one of the best movies of his career) Collateral. I have watched it numerous times.
96. Jodie Sweetin
———-
97. Michael Fassbender
Fassbender has still inertia from his Jobs impersonation, but he also worked a lot since then: Assassin’s Creed, Trespass Against Us, The Light Between Oceans, X-Men: Apocalypse, sometimes for big money. He’s not yet in Forbes top 20 of best paid actors last year, but he’s good and talented.
98. Deborah Ann Woll
———–
99. Chris Hemsworth
Thor can’t miss the top. Not a great talent, but a huge personality and he is very popular. I like him.
100. Chris Pratt
Passengers, wow! But his co-star is up and he’s the last on this list.
