Killing Floor, a Debut Novel in a Very Successful Series

August 23, 2018 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

First Lee Child novel, Killing Floor, was unexpectedly gory, not to mention the one in a million coincidences that took place. Very catchy, captivating, you find in the first two pages that Jack Reacher is no academic, he is a tough mix. After finishing my lecture, I wasn’t pushed to read the next one though, but I understand what may appeal to millions of his fans.

Jack Reacher as a major series character

The main character in this pretty huge novel series, is Jack Reacher, a former military police officer in US Army, now a drifter. James D. “Jim” Grant, the author, only uses “Lee Child” as a pen name. He modeled Jack Reacher on himself, both being tall (Reacher 6’6″ and Grant 6’4″), lean but muscular blonds. What a contrast with Tom Cruise, who is impersonating Reacher in two movies, already. He is ok, I have enjoyed the first one very much. It is based on “One Shot”, number 9 in the series. Now, I’m not going to describe the sequels and prequels, but this one has two other novels related.

Killing Floor – A Plot Try

Many readers say that they enjoyed this first novel. I’m subjective sometimes, and I have to say that I have read “Killing Floor” out of curiosity and because of Tom Cruise’s acting. The thing with this first novel is that it was extremely bloody without too much logic. As a normal human being, it’s hard to imagine such a world in times of peace. Now you know I’m joking, right? After the rising of ISIS and that propaganda, you can imagine everything.

In one of his wanderings, Jack Reacher gets off from the bus in a remote Georgia town, only to be arrested for murder, minutes after that. Not so funny but full of adrenaline. Surnames are used, military style, and during his arrest, he met a girl detective named Roscoe. I’m not going to spoil you the pleasure of uncovering the deep conspiracy taking place in Margrave, this town where some jazz-man was buried, or just died there, this being the reason for Reacher’s stop. I’ll tell you beforehand what you already can guess, that he will have an affair with “Roscoe” before everything else. The policewoman is very attractive. Also, another spoiler but for only a few pages is that his unexplained arrest has something to do with his own brother. I’ll let the rest to be discovered by the fans.

Horrible Thrillers

This is not something like James Patterson’s novels which are insanely horrible, bordering the horror genre. I really don’t get the appeal for such a thing. Extreme psychopaths kidnap, sequestrate, torture and eventually kill very beautiful females. No Monarch Project, no MK Ultra, just a sick guy or guys. Not even a logical plot. I have succinctly described “Kiss the Girls”, Patterson’s second novel.

Now, this first Jack Reacher is based on an ingenious series of events, stingily revealed in order to easily keep the pace. The action does not appeal to your culture or your high IQ. It is readily served page after page. Except for a few extremely far-fetched things, every step is easily guessed. It’s not a bad read, I’m sure there are a lot of you who will enjoy this without a second thought, but it’s not my kind of favorite novel either. I prefer the movies, and I’m glad they made only two of them at the moment. They have prepared the third John Wick, though. This character is not even based on a literary work, it’s another insanely bloody screen fantasy.
