There are a few more hours to the 92nd Academy Awards ceremony in 2020, so here, I’m going to present my certain predictions. It was a good year in the cinema and till now, there are not any contradictions and misdeeds. More than that, a South Korean movie is nominated for Best Picture. Parasite, directed by Bong Joon Ho, offers something new, something fresh, with all its soft horror-ish elements.
Theoretically one can have real difficulties in picking the winner in every category. With the recently included voting system, where the members put five choices in order, in every category, things can get less complicated, but I don’t see many surprises, except for Best Picture.
Let’s start with the over 90% and the most obvious, the Best Actor and the Best Actress. With four Oscar nominations, three for Best Acting and one for supporting, Joaquin Phoenix is closer than ever to win this year. If not because he was the best in Joker, at least by not having real competition. Leo is good, but in Tarantino’s movie, he hadn’t an Oscar performance. Banderas was perfect, and Almodovar’s movie was pure art, but again, the role was faint near Joaquin’s.
All the same with the others. Good movies, but that’s all.
I regret I haven’t watched yet Bombshell, which throws two female nominees in the urn, but my feelings tell me Renee Zellweger will go home with the prize. Her Judy Garland was the absolute resemblance to the great and truly unfortunate actress. Oh, dear! I’ve watched Cynthia Erivo in Harriet and as Harriet, Saoirse and Scarlett in both their nominated movies and my gut tells me that the Texas girl, already a winner for her supporting role in Cold Mountain (2003) will score her second Oscar.
With the supporting actors can be hard, all of them had terrific performances, especially Joe Pesci, Anthony Hopkins, and Tom Hanks. The winning current goes with Brad Pitt in 2020, maybe because he didn’t get an Oscar for his acting yet. He shared the prize with others for producing 12 Years a Slave in 2013. At the supporting ladies, my bet is for Bruce Dern’s offspring, Laura, a witty lawyer in Marriage Story. Although, I haven’t watched Bombshell (for Robbie), or Richard Jewell (for Kathy Bates).

Best Director will be disputed by Sam Mendes (1917), Bong Joon Ho (Parasite), and Tarantino, unfortunately. Why unfortunately? Because Once Upon a Time… is not his best, his best may yet come… in the future, in a pseudo-comedy about Lady Di, or something worse, grossly sponsored by the Chinese. He has great chances for Best Original Screenplay, even if Baumbach is also highly deserving (Marriage Story).
I loved all the adapted screenplays, Jojo, The Two Popes, even Joker. I see Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit a winner.
Now, the last prize of the night is hard to get. Do you know that Beyonce will vote for Best Picture? Wow! The best movies this year are by far Jojo Rabbit and Parasite, but it won’t come as a surprise if 1917 will get the Oscar, even if it wasn’t better than Nolan’s Dunkirk. It deserves the best British Achievement of the Year, OK, it won the Globe for Drama, OK. Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story won’t be a surprise either, it is an amazing movie. The biggest surprise will be if Once Upon A Time… in Hollywood will win. Parasite and Jojo Rabbit are thorough, the most memorable movies this year.
