My Own 92nd Academy Awards Predictions, Now, in 2020!

February 8, 2020 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

Joaquin Phoenix in Joker

There are a few more hours to the 92nd Academy Awards ceremony in 2020, so here, I’m going to present my certain predictions. It was a good year in the cinema and till now, there are not any contradictions and misdeeds. More than that, a South Korean movie is nominated for Best Picture. Parasite, directed by Bong Joon Ho, offers something new, something fresh, with all its soft horror-ish elements. Theoretically one can have real difficulties in picking the winner in every category. With … [Read more...]

13 Talented Actors Without an Oscar

May 18, 2017 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

Joaquin Phoenix and Katherine Waterston in Inherent Vice (2014)

They are actors without an Oscar even if they deserved an award unlike other peers. There is no particular order to them. These actors and actresses were nominated at least for a Best Supporting role, some of them several times, but despite their talent, they didn't get it yet. Except one of them (Richard Burton), all the others are pretty recent, a 20-25 years span is a whole life for just a part of you.   James Woods [source for all pics: imdb.com] James Woods was born on 18 … [Read more...]

Quills

Quills - Geoffrey Rush

"Quills" is an extraordinary essay about talent and brilliancy. It doesn't matter that the critics and historians consider the movie historically inaccurate. It is perfectly acted and the ideas are very clearly presented. As the producers said in the year 2000, when the film was released, it was not about the accuracy, "but exploring issues such as censorship, pornography, sex, art, mental illness, and religion." (cf. Wikipedia) [source] - and all the others The movie depicts the period … [Read more...]

Who Deserves to Win?

Quentin Tarantino in Django Unchained

With this essay post I have separated a new sub category on this blog, the Awards, which will be as you already guess, the Motion Pictures specialized talk. Everything I know related to Oscars, Globes, Emmy, SAG, and such, will be part from this new sub category. Tonight, the Oscars ceremony will take place and I feel compelled to say a few words about it. I don't feel there were many mistakes this year. Ben Affleck and Quentin Tarantino think they were robbed by Best Director nominations, … [Read more...]

The Master

Joaquin Phoenix - The Master

There are five nominations for Best Actor in a Leading Role and one of them is my favorite, Joaquin Phoenix for his performance in The Master. The film received two other Oscar nominations, also important, Best Supporting Actor and Actress for Hoffman and Amy Adams. It is strange and dark, it is filmed by a compatriot of mine, Mihai Mălaimare Jr., it is directed by Tom Cruise's friend, Paul Thomas Anderson of Magnolia fame. By the way, the premiere was at the Venice Film Festival in … [Read more...]
