Going in Style is so incredibly weak and predictable at the same time, that one can think it's just a mockery. I have started from the image below, which doesn't have a connection with this movie, and replaced Liam Neeson with Alan Arkin. What do we have then? A sort of a variation of a sort of a crime comedy with septuagenarians, like Stand Up Guys, where only Arkin is the common piece, and Al Pacino and Christopher Walken are replaced with Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine. All of them have … [Read more...]
Barely Lethal
Sometimes one needs a less pretentious movie to lift its mood up. Barely Lethal is one of them. Watching it I felt amused and refreshed. It happens maybe because I like how Hailee Steinfeld grows up by being better and better every day. Since True Grit which brought her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress at 14, she kept intact her glowing. This movie is an independent action comedy, where even Samuel L. Jackson is less tiring as usual. I'll come back to him later. I am sorry to … [Read more...]
My Best Comedies – Updated
This is an updated list with my favorite comedies at the moment. I have thought a long on it, I have pondered a lot of factors, but generally it shows my taste, based on a great admiration for certain comedians and comedy creators. I used to dislike some actors, but those times have past. I judge a movie on how I feel watching it and what lingers after that. I am a declared fan of Will Ferrell, Mel Brooks, Woody Allen, Trey Parker & Matt Stone, Sacha Baron Cohen, John C. Reilly, Kristen Wiig, … [Read more...]
Zoolander
I don't know how I have delayed until now to write about this incredibly amazing comedy, a Ben Stiller product. It's not hard to imagine what could happen if you take Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell and throw them together in the fashion cauldron, with a mix of other great actors and real life celebrities. Zoolander is a 2001 release directed by Ben Stiller and written by Drake Sather, Ben Stiller, and John Hamburg. It is a comedy which made my Top 10 Comedies of all times, it was … [Read more...]
Tower Heist, an Enjoyable Comedy
Tower Heist is a sparkling comedy directed by Brett Ratner and starring a crowd of perfectly fitted comedians. It received quite a bad review from the reputable Roger Ebert in person, which deeply disappointed me. I figure that whatever other people said about him, he is completely lacking a sense of humor. He prized Eddie Murphy though, saying something like that on his pretty bad review of the movie: Murphy, in his first role since 2009, is in full Eddie Murphy mode, with comic riffs and … [Read more...]
Death at a Funeral – the Original
Such a pity that I haven't seen Alan Tudyk in enough movies... He is a scene stealer, like his colleague from A Kight's Tale, Paul Bettany. Speaking of Bettany, I've recently watched Mortdecai, and I liked it, the movie, the acting, everything. But on Mortdecai, details maybe in a future post. Death at a Funeral, is a British comedy released in 2007 and directed by Frank Oz. It was so hilarious, that the Americans wanted in, and made a remake only three years after. Unfortunately, it was not as … [Read more...]
