When I first read The White Tiger a few years back, I readily gave it five stars on Goodreads, but the real impact was diluted with other happenings around. Now, this 2008 Man Booker Prize-winning novel has been adapted to a pretty accurate movie. I have also wondered which of these two to review here, the novel, or the movie. I certainly prefer the novel, but the movie is suited for its proper category. Believe me, I have re-read the book right after watching the movie and I was profoundly … [Read more...]
Perfect Strangers, a Movie Concept started by Paolo Genovese
A few years ago, I watched Perfect Strangers 2017 (Perfectos desconocidos), a Spanish movie by Alex de la Iglesia, one of my favorite directors. Little I knew at the time that the film I liked was actually based on another one, released in 2016, and written by a bunch of Italians including Paolo Genovese, who also directed. So, the original was named Perfetti sconosciuti, and it is the movie with the most foreign replicas ever. I'm watching the original as I'm writing about it, right now. It is … [Read more...]
The Yellow Sea 2010 Is an Amazing Korean Crime Drama
The Yellow Sea is a 2010 South Korean movie written and directed by Na Hong-jin, the one who made his debut in 2008 with a gruesome feature named The Chaser. Not that this one is less gruesome, or maybe it is. Bloody or not, it's watchable, you are prepared somehow in advance for the upcoming violence, so this is not a horror movie. As I already mentioned in a previous post, this is a surprise first review in this category. I should have started with a more classical piece like Chan-wook Park's … [Read more...]
New Sub-Category on RodolfoGrimaldi.com: Korean Cinema
The Korean cinema is a wanting chapter here on my blog. It seems that the highest-grossing domestic films in South Korea have little to do with the best Korean movies per se. Fortunately Parasite (2019) dragged international viewers to Korean cinema, but again, it seems that only pure money-making investments are sold on foreign markets. Too bad, because Korean cinema has a flavor of its own, different from what the Hollywood fan was stuffed with over the years. Why Marvel movies are so popular? … [Read more...]
Never Look Away Is an Exquisitely Sensual Drama
Even if it was not unanimously appreciated, Never Look Away is nevertheless one of the best and also one the most beautiful movies of 2018. Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s epic is a huge improvement from his remake of The Tourist. With that flop, he had a vision of pairing Angelina Jolie with Johnny Depp. He wasn't quite wrong since the Golden Globes HFPA nominated the movie just to hang out with the two stars, but these are not my words, these were thrown as an inside joke by Ricky Gervais, … [Read more...]
Dhoom 3 Is the Pearl of the Crown in a Bollywood Action Franchise
Dhoom 3 is an Indian adventure flick which crowns a pretty successful series starring supercop Jai Dixit with his colleague Ali. With this post I officially inaugurate the new subcategory I named "Indian". This doesn't seem that the films reviewed here were all made in Bollywood because I sincerely don't think that Pan Nalin or Mira Nair made movies according to these rules. Dhoom 3 is a standard Bollywood production, as the whole series is, but this one is the best in everything. This movie's … [Read more...]
