Call Me by Your Name – After “Oscars so Black” comes “Oscars so Gay”

April 23, 2018 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet in Call Me by Your Name

It was impossible for the weak and superficial so-called critics to not make a parallel between Call Me by Your Name and Ang Lee's Broken Mountain, and with this information, I revealed the first spoiler: it is a movie with a homosexual relationship. The second spoiler is that it is far away from achieving the beauty and the capability of Broken Mountain. I don't understand why this intellectual Jewish psychodrama was on the Best Picture nominees list. Was it because of the relationship's … [Read more...]

Den of Thieves, a Clever Crime Noir Flick

Den of Thieves - Gerard Butler

Den of Thieves is a very entertaining heist movie made recently by Christian Gudergast. A perfect action/crime/drama/thriller one needs to watch twice to be able to connect all the dots. That is only because this movie has a switch you'll all like in the end. [source: imdb.com] They say at the beginning that every 11 minutes a bank is robbed in LA. I found it a little sensational. I thought that it’s just a movie, let me see if it will be better than London Has Fallen, The Butler … [Read more...]

Three Inter-related Funny Fantasy Movies You’ll Love

April 13, 2018 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

Freaky Friday - Jamie Lee Curtis, Lindsay Lohan

These three inter-related movies are funny fantasy movies I liked myself. It is obviously a subjective opinion, it is based on my taste which is not as out of place as it sometimes seems. They are connected in ways you'll discover by reading this article. If you already watched them, you will certainly figure out what this is about. [source of all pictures: imdb.com] Freaky Friday First of them is Freaky Friday (2003), directed by Mark Waters. It stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay … [Read more...]

A Prophet (Un prophète in French), a Beautiful Metaphor

March 23, 2018 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

Tahar Rahim - Un prophète (2009)

A Prophet is what can be called a “prison movie”. In his genre, it’s one of the best I’ve ever watched. It was released in 2009 and has been nominated for Best Foreign Movie both for Oscars and Golden Globes. Unfortunately, it competed with The Secret in Their Eyes (El secreto de sus ojos) which won the Oscar. The Globe has been received by a German movie, The White Ribbon. It won a BAFTA instead, for the best foreign movie category, many Césars (Best Film, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, … [Read more...]

Oscar Winners at the 90th Academy Awards in 2018

Guillermo Del Toro with his two Oscar statuettes for Best Picture and Directing

The following list of Oscar winners and nominees at the 90th Academy Awards ceremony in 2018 is presented here in the same order it appeared on CNN's website. I have completed it where I could. They haven't respected the original order. Doesn't matter, it seems my Oscar predictions from yesterday were only partially right, but better than in other years. I enjoyed The Shape of Water enormously, but I liked Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, more. Winners are specified and written in bold … [Read more...]

My Oscar Predictions for the 2018 Awards Ceremony

Oscar predictions: Gary Oldman in The Darkest Hour (2017)

I am happy for the movies and the nominees. This post is about my Oscar predictions with some comments. Tonight we will find out who are the winners this year. Incredibly, amazingly, there will be no big surprises, unless some backstage producer pulls a prank again. In the following movie list, there are only one or two I haven’t watched. I have considered the Best Picture nominations and the movies in which the Best Actor/Actress, Best Supporting Actor/Actress, Directing, Original/Adapted … [Read more...]
