There are a few more hours to the 92nd Academy Awards ceremony in 2020, so here, I’m going to present my certain predictions. It was a good year in the cinema and till now, there are not any contradictions and misdeeds. More than that, a South Korean movie is nominated for Best Picture. Parasite, directed by Bong Joon Ho, offers something new, something fresh, with all its soft horror-ish elements. Theoretically one can have real difficulties in picking the winner in every category. With … [Read more...]
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Is Not As Bad As They Say
Quentin Tarantino's Hateful Five was a pretty gruesome movie. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is far from that. Not only it displays some of the hottest stars in Hollywood right now, but it is assorted with a few of Tarantino's former stars cameos, the oldest of all being Michael Madsen. I read at least one bad review about it, and I have to disagree. I don't say this is the best Tarantino to date, because I don't particularly like his style, but here he wasn't just as tiring. The Counselor – Great Stars in a Forgettable Movie
The Counselor is a 2013 movie made by Ridley Scott and written by no other than Cormac McCarthy, the 2007 Pulitzer winner for "The Road". The book was successfully dramatized in a post-apocalyptic movie directed by John Hillcoat and written by Joe Penhall, a good move perhaps. McCarthy's dialogue is too heavy without being relevant for the plot, and everything is much too cryptic. Sometimes is clumsy and bland, the action doesn't seem to be built logically. A lot of side stories without … [Read more...]
The Big Short – Another Wall Street Movie
The Big Short is another movie on the Best Pictures nominees list this year. I am a very big admirer of all the guys involved with it, actors, the director, the book's author, etc, but I feel that I have to mention a few things from the beginning. This is not The Wolf of Wall Street, this is not some biography, this is a movie largely based on real facts with some more than large suppositions and invented characters. Nor them, nor the figures are appropriate, or even close to … [Read more...]
True Romance
True Romance is a 1993 American action romantic crime film directed by Tony Scott and written by Quentin Tarantino. It is very entertaining, and it has a freshness that has reached even Tarantino's taste. He declared at a moment that he wouldn't have directed it better than Tony Scott. It is his second screenplay written for an important movie, the other one being his first low budget hit, Reservoir Dogs. I'm glad I have finally watched this movie, after noticing it on Empire Magazine's 2008 … [Read more...]
World War Z!
I knew it from the beginning that I'm going to waste precious time watching this ridiculous movie. I never was fond of zombies, nor of Brad Pitt. I remember his advert to Levis 501, I didn't know at the time it was him taking that bath on the river, the Amish girl excitedly waiting behind a tree, the focus was on the pair of jeans he has hidden under his underwear. When they launched Legends of the Fall, I was in France. I went to cinema and watch the movie in French, so his bad acting wasn't so … [Read more...]
