In a Rotten Tomatoes list with best comedies of 2018, The Death of Stalin is on #6, after movies like Keep the Change, Bathtubs Over Broadway, Eighth Grade, and Oh Lucy!. That is insane! Nobody heard of those, I'm sorry. It seems that Armando Iannucci's movie is the best of 2018, and of 2017, the official released year. It is said that all the best comedies contain serious messages. Now The Death of Stalin is a satire and a comedy which is advisable to be considered as such. Seriously? There's … [Read more...]
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Is Not As Bad As They Say
Quentin Tarantino's Hateful Five was a pretty gruesome movie. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is far from that. Not only it displays some of the hottest stars in Hollywood right now, but it is assorted with a few of Tarantino's former stars cameos, the oldest of all being Michael Madsen. I read at least one bad review about it, and I have to disagree. I don't say this is the best Tarantino to date, because I don't particularly like his style, but here he wasn't just as tiring. You Think You Can Learn from Avengers Endgame? Think Deeper!
The most praised of them all, the highest-rated, the dearest (how else), Avengers Endgame is also the last one, I hope. This 8.6 (still) IMDb rated nonsense is now on #35 in Top 250 list on the Amazon-owned website, but a month ago it even reached #24. One may not consider this classification reliable, it is almost as unreliable as the Oscars, but it expresses the public taste in entertainment at the moment. It is too long despite some remarkable acting, accidental (I feel), from some of the … [Read more...]
Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma – An Over Two Hours Long Featured Movie
I have finally had the opportunity to watch Alfonso Cuarón's Roma, and I was left with somehow a bitter taste. It was not because the movie is bad, far from that, but it is left unfinished, or, at least this is what I feel. I'm sure I'm not alone. The movie was exemplary acted by everyone involved. Some critics consider Roma the best movie of the decade. Which one, I wonder, 2010-2020, or 2009-2019? 2019 just started and there is time to judge for the next year. I don't subscribe to this still … [Read more...]
Under the Silver Lake – A Movie Watched First at Cannes
Under the Silver Lake is a weird movie, but it is not unwatchable. On the contrary, it is somehow very esthetic. Andrew Garfield is also very good in this type of role. When I say it's weird, think at David Lynch adapting a Bret Easton Ellis kind of weird. The difference is that David Robert Mitchell, the filmmaker, actually tries to say something. The topic is not sterile at all. [source for all pics: imdb.com] Under the Silver Lake - Plot In a world where people don't necessarily run … [Read more...]
Byzantium Vampires Are Different, Sun Is Friendly and They Have Sex
I usually don't appreciate a vampire movie with the undead walking freely during the daytime. Byzantium vampires are that different from the classic ones; they don't sleep in coffins, they don't need soil from their birthplaces, and they are not affected by sunlight. They also are capable of making sex. Alas, they differ from the Twilight vampires as well. Their creation has some logic, even if it is not guided by the classic law. They have in common the bloodsucking. The reason you may enjoy it … [Read more...]
