Before watching the 2018 version of Papillon, where a Scorpio is played yet by another Aries, I was very excited. I imagined a modern vision of this rich and adventurous book, with an advanced filming technique. I thought it will be something memorable, especially since Charlie Hunnam and the acclaimed Freddie Mercury's recently impersonator, Rami Malek, have both a lot of entertaining potentials. Unfortunately, my disappointment was directly measured upon my expectations. I have been … [Read more...]
JeruZalem – A Decent Horror from Israel
In seven Rotten Tomatoes' "top critics" who have undergone to critic Jeruzalem, only two of them didn't trash it. I don't usually enjoy the horror genre, but there are some exceptions. This is a goreless horror, and it's somehow brilliant. I don't understand the low reaction and more than that, I don't understand the low rating the movie achieved. It may be incorrect to define the IMDB voters as retarded because I'm one of them and everyone is "free" to think and have different opinions. I'm … [Read more...]
Paul McGuigan’s The Acid House – Irvine Welsh at Its Weirdest
The Acid House is a 1998 Scottish three parts movie made by Paul McGuigan. I have been excited to watch another Irvine Welsh material, after Trainspotting one and Part Two, and of course Filth. I'm not repressing my disappointment. It was fine, all right, but it was too much. [source of all pics: imdb.com] The Acid House Plots? I can't figure the plots here, there are three pieces, three stories, all happening in sordid Scottish neighborhoods in unnamed Scottish cities. There's … [Read more...]
Basquiat, a Lightning Genius in the New York’s Eighties
Outstanding debut by Julian Schnabel, Basquiat is a glimpse in a quirky mind, one less understood at the time, but highly famed, no matter what. I never liked the color specification referring at Jean-Michel Basquiat as the most famous American black painter of all times. Some of this is also diluted somehow in the movie as well, in fictional interviews, with fictional characters, fictional happenings and dialogues. [source for both pics: imdb.com] Basquiat - Plot Here, Basquiat is … [Read more...]
9 Great Novels Not Yet on the Big Screen
This post used to have 10 great novels. You never know when you adapt a novel if the movie will be better than the book. Some following novels were thought to become great movies. The projects were delayed indefinitely. Others were never really considered. Some of them are pure fiction, some are fantasies or science fiction. Worse novels found their ways to the big screen and a few of them even became box office hits. First of the Great Novels: Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts Of … [Read more...]
Den of Thieves, a Clever Crime Noir Flick
Den of Thieves is a very entertaining heist movie made recently by Christian Gudergast. A perfect action/crime/drama/thriller one needs to watch twice to be able to connect all the dots. That is only because this movie has a switch you'll all like in the end. [source: imdb.com] They say at the beginning that every 11 minutes a bank is robbed in LA. I found it a little sensational. I thought that it’s just a movie, let me see if it will be better than London Has Fallen, The Butler … [Read more...]
