The Bureau (2015-2020) is a five-season French spy thriller action drama series created by Éric Rochant of The Patriots’ fame. Monsieur Rochant seems to be obsessed with the shadow world of secret services, but as far as The Bureau is concerned, this is just a cover, a cover for a sublime love story, more or less impossible, mostly impossible. In France, the show was aired by the name of Le Bureau des légendes, which I found a little stupid, but it certainly has been based on a sort of code. It … [Read more...]
The Old Man – a Thriller Almost as Good as the Novel
The Old Man is a thriller drama series loosely inspired by Thomas Perry's homonym novel. Very entertaining considering that the show's hero is somehow different than the one in the book. Doesn't matter very much because of the two main stars: Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow. A bright contribution was provided as well by Arrested Development’s Alia Shawkat. She was good even if she wasn’t required to be funny here. [source:imdb.com] The Old Man - Plot I’m afraid most of you haven’t read … [Read more...]
Under the Silver Lake – A Movie Watched First at Cannes
Under the Silver Lake is a weird movie, but it is not unwatchable. On the contrary, it is somehow very esthetic. Andrew Garfield is also very good in this type of role. When I say it's weird, think at David Lynch adapting a Bret Easton Ellis kind of weird. The difference is that David Robert Mitchell, the filmmaker, actually tries to say something. The topic is not sterile at all. [source for all pics: imdb.com] Under the Silver Lake - Plot In a world where people don't necessarily run … [Read more...]
Killing Floor, a Debut Novel in a Very Successful Series
First Lee Child novel, Killing Floor, was unexpectedly gory, not to mention the one in a million coincidences that took place. Very catchy, captivating, you find in the first two pages that Jack Reacher is no academic, he is a tough mix. After finishing my lecture, I wasn't pushed to read the next one though, but I understand what may appeal to millions of his fans. Jack Reacher as a major series character The main character in this pretty huge novel series, is Jack Reacher, a … [Read more...]
The Equalizer, an Action-Thriller Masterpiece from 2014
In The Equalizer 2's wake, the sequel to be released on July 20, 2018, I felt compelled to review this action thriller directed by Antoine Fuqua, a genre's specialist. After movies like Training Day (2001), starring Denzel Washington as well, Olympus Has Fallen (2013), and Southpaw (2015), to name just a few, Fuqua is well-established as a very talented director. He is also a producer and an actor, so, the package is almost complete. Antoine Fuqua doesn't need to write his own scripts because … [Read more...]
The Dark Fields aka Limitless by Alan Glyn, an Entertaining Techno-Thriller
This is a book which never was a priority for me to read. Maybe you know that The Dark Fields is called now Limitless after the movie apparently inspired by it. What I have never understood is how one can take a good book, and believe when I tell you that The Dark Fields is a good read, make a script after it and then destroy every logic structure and make a second-hand movie. [source: goodreads] The Dark Fields on short, actually on very short When I watched Limitless in 2001, … [Read more...]
