What a pleasant surprise I had while watching the Norwegian crime/thriller/drama Headhunters, "Hodejegerne" in original! It is a 2011 Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany co-production with meaning. Some of the critics say it lacks logic. I don't think so. Every second is planned to mean what it has to mean, and the surprises are plenty. One doesn't need a lot of explaining while watching Headhunters. I have been first intrigued, then pleased. The message is also fine, because unbelievably, it's … [Read more...]
Jason Bourne 2016 – Answers Are Simple
Jason Bourne 2016 came as an interesting revelation after the previous movies in the franchise. It is better welded in structure with a much simpler plot than any of Robert Ludlum's novels. As I remember, I don't recall Ludlum's plots in the previous releases. They were an amalgam of 100% action and violence without an explanatory motivation. Now, with this one here, you don't need explanations. The characters are new, and the plot is simple. More than that, it is acted with no holes, and no … [Read more...]
The Accountant – Ben Affleck Recovering from Batman
Prologue The Accountant is a thriller directed by Gavin O'Connor, which premiered in October 2016, being worldwide released the same month. It was written by Bill Dubuque. O'Connor is the director of Warrior, a movie of whom people still discuss right now. Ben Affleck is again at his highest, like he was in the Oscar winner Argo, which he also directed and produced. I really liked the movie, even if they say it wasn't accurate, and added this or that regarding the Canadians' … [Read more...]
IT 2016 – A Horror/Thriller with Cyberspace Pretensions
IT 2016 (I know, I have to spell it "I.T. made in 2016", to not be mistaken with 1990 It, a television miniseries) is a B thriller directed by John Moore and written mostly by the obscure Dan Kay, who seems specialized in the low rated niche of horrors. One of those is Pay the Ghost (2015), one of Nicolas Cage's $1 for the dozen movies. Additional dialogues were written by William Wisher Jr., who's most impressive contribution to date was something he added to 1984 The Terminator. It is an … [Read more...]
The Usual Suspects – One Top Cult Mystery Thriller
One of my Top 10 movies of all times, The Usual Suspects is a cult mystery crime thriller released in 1995, written by Christopher McQuarrie, and directed by Bryan Singer. It doesn't have to make sense, actually, because it is too catchy on the whole. Everything started with and from a police lineup. McQuarrie made all up while working for a lawyer. The movie was shown first at Cannes Film Festival in 1995, out of the competition. After that it had a very reduced distribution in America, but … [Read more...]
Closed Circuit
I have recently watched Closed Circuit and I was thrilled of how good it was made for a movie with such a delicate subject. After Paris events, one can be a little bit more than a little biased toward a public bombing where 120 people were killed, a fictive event, of course, but not at all improbable. It happens in London, where usually only IRA was putting the bombs. Now, in this case, some Turkish guy was arrested. His wife and kid have been taken in custody as well. Interesting, isn't it? … [Read more...]
