I wanted from the beginnings of this blog to feature one of the most talented directors alive, who happens to be Turk. Fatih Akın is a Hamburger Turk, born in 1973. I have seen and enjoyed almost all his movies, even his fragments in the collective humanitarian releases, like New York, I Love You, or Visions of Europe. Soul Kitchen is a 2009 German movie, directed by Akin (you see, I started to use his European surname spelling, with "i" instead of the Turkish "ı"). The movie is also written by … [Read more...]
Dom Hemingway
The movie tries to remind the viewer of some absolutely brilliant combination between Quentin Tarantino's witty speech and Guy Richie's characters; cockney flavor. It is not. I have been extremely disappointed. It has a good part though, who came almost unexpected: the debut of a former model from Romania, Madalina Diana Ghenea. Not a big role, but representative. So, that was the best part of this very advertised joke of a film. Jude Law, is a good actor who sometimes go further in … [Read more...]
The Wolf of Wall Street
It is almost unbelievable the successful trajectory of Jonah Hill, the former Superbad type movies actor. With the role of "Donnie Azoff" in this last Martin Scorsese superproduction, The Wolf of Wall Street. Actually it is normal, counting that he has been good all along, despite that the "superproducers" discovered him just in the last three years. It is a casting matter, they do with acting like the other industries do when outsourcing services in Asia or somewhere else. Starting every year … [Read more...]
Invictus – Review Dedicated to Nelson Mandela
This is a special movie, about a very special historical character. The recent death of President Nelson Mandela, made this movie more than special. It is a ten on my list, and that's amazing because I'm not very fond of Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman or Matt Damon. They are all great and awarded, and they all participated to give value to the movie. Clint Eastwood uses some cheap emotional clichés in almost every movie, so they are classic by now. This movie is a masterpiece. It shows without … [Read more...]
Good Bye, Paul Walker
It happens without my will! This category, created for news and stuff like that, makes the obituaries more than anything else. I'll try to change that in the future. I know Paul Walker before the movie that made him famous, The Fast and the Furious. I noticed him in The Skulls, in 2000 and only after that, in the movie co stared with Vin Diesel. He was good, but not extraordinary. Very good for the roles he acted. He was good looking as well. On November 30, 2013, Walker and a 38 years old … [Read more...]
Pineapple Express
In 2008 I was in some place where I used to be so busy every day, that I couldn't watch too many movies at once. This one, Pineapple Express slipped from the bundle, mostly that I was a fan of nobody from the movie at the time, and thinking that this is the team who brought Superbad to be a "hit" (great words, too great) was not an advantage at all. So, I considered Superbad a bad joke. I like comedies, I always liked them. Anyway, I wasn't a fan of Seth Rogen either, and I profoundly disliked … [Read more...]
