The Pinterest Experience

Pinterest is a pinboard-style photo sharing website that allows users to create and manage theme-based image collections such as events, interests, hobbies, and more. Users can browse other pinboards for inspiration, ‘re-pin’ images to their own collections or ‘like’ photos. Pinterest’s mission is to “connect everyone in the world through the ‘things’ they find interesting” via a global platform of inspiration and idea sharing. Founded by Ben Silbermann, Paul Sciarra, and Evan Sharp, the site is managed by Cold Brew Labs and funded by a small group of entrepreneurs and inventors.” (Wikipedia definition)

Pinterest is like Twitter, only better. If you are smart you can easily find joy in what it means. On Twitter, when you dumbly “tweet” without meaning, nobody cares. Oh, they care and absorb dumb tweets from Rihanna or Chris Brown, but not yours. The same with pins. Pinterest is pushing a few accounts around, for you to automatically follow when you make an account, just to have a stream of pins. Again, it’s like Twitter, if you don’t follow anyone, you don’t see what others have to say, so it’s harder for you to get what’s Twitter about. Pinterest took care of this and delivered to the newcomers, the beautifully put together accounts of persons already famous. To have over two million followers on Pinterest without being Lady Gaga, is something. Only I just told you, they’re good on Pinterest and they are added automatically. It’s your choice to continue with them or to unfollow them, choosing of course, other people to follow. I almost forgot to say that there is a general stream, actually everyone on this earth can see “live” what’s pinning. You just have to click on “Pinterest”.

Under the Pinterest logo, you have this options:

  • Following · If you click on it, it will show pins posted by people who you follow.
  • Categories · This is a drop-down thing. Click on it and choose a category of pins you want to see on your stream. It looks large, but it’s incomplete. Not their fault
  • Everything · The main stream. All the pins of the moment, “live”.
  • Popular · I think here appears the most re-pinned pics. A sort of “viral” pin stream.
  • Gifts · Something new. They offer you some ways to choose from the online offer and not only. It gives a monetizing purpose to this site.
  • 30 Days of Pinspiration · Find yourself what’s about!
