This is not necessarily about a genre per se, it’s about Solomon Kane, a movie that hardly saves face with the impressive cast, better than Van Helsing anyway, which is a stupid fantasy. At least Solomon Kane is a Gothic fantasy, pushed even to the limit of SciFi with a Transformers’ inspired “beast” (one of the multitude of Devil crones) and the Highlander Series inspired soul-energy surge, you’ll see if you have the patience to spend (let say spend, not lose) effectively 94 minutes, or the entire 109’, if you wanna know which other director’s family members are playing. Don’t. I have had the patience to scroll a few times over certain sequences to find wtf is “young Sarah” (a certain Madeleine Bassett), proudly placed on the credits list after her order of 2 seconds appearance. Otherwise, “the Witch” played by Isabel Bassett and some others not mentioned, or maybe it was just some computer trick to split her in three different ages, is also saying some replicas, in the movie tone. Haven’t forgot the director’s name, it’s the famous Michael J Bassett. Yes, I haven’t heard of him either. The music is lame, some dirty Rammstein track would have been welcomed, to accommodate the ten minutes of credits.
Let’s talk about the power players, the mighty James “Marc Anthony” Purefoy, the special appeared Max Von Sydow and the two and a half minutes appeared Jason Flemyng, who again reminds me of Highlander’s Clancy Brown playn’ Kurgan .
Max Von Sydow ’s role is exaggerated when “excommunicating” young Solomon if he wouldn’t go the church’s way. Very vague church. Unfriendly, controversial. Nice voice, as the one of Moloch, played by Flemyng. Solomon Kane, not listening to his father, became a hero, a captain, a commander, a leader who thinks he killed his brother (it was an accident, I asure you) when leaving home, saving someone from rape.
Highlander, what a movie. Plenty of Queen music and Freddy Mercury ’s voice, oh but that was a diversion, the subject here is about the decrepitude of Marcus Antonius (excuse my Latin). Mr. Bassett took of the package of HBO’s muscles and proceed on tattoo-ing the usually breathtaking Purefoy, with anti – Satanist symbols basketball team member’s signatures on a ball look-alike, and a cross carved Inglorious Basterds style on his back, I’m sure, a practice at the times, when Britain was well established in shires and all, it was the plague, or after the plague, and “evil” was walking freely, through plenty of forests, no crops, the people communities were formed by a church, a central market, a few heavy architected stone buildings and a hand of people burning witches, or at least trying to burn them, on the stone cladded central market. Hmm, a Vince Vaughn sort of tirade, anyway this is the sound in my mind in the absence of Rammstein or Type’O Negative or whatever.
