Poor Pompous Critic, Don’t Spoil My Pleasure!

September 4, 2017 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

Lindsay Duncan, the critic having a revelation in Birdman

I have never liked a movie review, or, by the way, any review which uncovers the plot in the first sentences. Actually, I quite hate these sort of reviews. I like to be surprised by a film, or book, or whatever masterpiece which was made exactly for that, it was conceived to throw me and you out of our-self with laugh, grief, or gore, one never knows. Then some pretentious "famous" critic spoils it for me, because he's "smart" and doesn't stomach the author, or the star in the movie he … [Read more...]

56 Movies or, The Year 2008 in Cinema

February 6, 2012 By Daniel Mihai Popescu 9 Comments

Dev Patel in Slumdog Millionaire

It seems year 2008 is my favorite year regarding movie production, in the new millennium so far. It is the year of The Dark Knight (8.9) and Slumdog Millionaire (8.2). It is the year of Twilight, the iconic start of a successful saga in a genre I thought was "made up" for a special category of kids, the "Young Adult" genre. Anyway, that was the time when I have heard for the first time of them. I know, Sarah Michelle Gellar already made Buffy the Vampire Slayer famous on American Television … [Read more...]

Why aren’t we ALL, globally connected through Facebook?

Idiocracy - Poster

You know why Facebook is good? Because it has electrolytes. Yeah. And what is this “electrolytes”? This is what makes Facebook good. All our friends are there, even our non-friends are there. They all utilize Facebook. Dear friends, figments from Idiocracy may be found all over, in the last 10 years Hollywood movie productions, around us, everywhere you turn your heads. Sex, teenage sex (or the wishing of it), money and the wishing of it, “take a summer job, WE need your money too, “I … [Read more...]

Gothic – Solomon Kane

Solomon Kane - Poster

This is not necessarily about a genre per se, it’s about Solomon Kane, a movie that hardly saves face with the impressive cast, better than Van Helsing anyway, which is a stupid fantasy. At least Solomon Kane is a Gothic fantasy, pushed even to the limit of SciFi with a Transformers’ inspired “beast” (one of the multitude of Devil crones) and the Highlander Series inspired soul-energy surge, you’ll see if you have the patience to spend (let say spend, not lose) effectively 94 minutes, or the … [Read more...]

Comedy – She’s Out of My League

She's Out of My League - poster

By saying comedy , I think to the film genre, not other form of the arts palette, and with She's Out of My League I'm starting this genre posts on my blog. In a positive note I can say that it’s a hard time to find a good comedy these days, but if you’re not giving up so quick, you’ll be successful enough for the effort made to be deserved. Big fan of movies anyway, I happened to stumble upon some good stuff. I was more attracted by the “serious” type, politicos, gross substance kinda Syriana or … [Read more...]
