The American

January 13, 2012 By Daniel Mihai Popescu 1 Comment

George Clooney is one of my favorite actors. I have a lot of favorites, I can brag for days about them, about why I like one or another. As you noticed, I’m going to write a few words about The American, an European film in which the above mentioned favorite actor of mine is top star. It is a 2010 release, it is a movie directed by the Dutch Anton Corbijn, with an action taking place in Northern Italy. Clooney is not a stranger at all in Italy, he has property there, and was also deeply involved with an Italian model.

Clooney with Violante Placido

The American had a bad press in the United States, because it was too static, and the flesh had to be censored on TV. With a poster making you to expect maybe a great American anti-terrorist hero, a cold blood bath and a lot of running, we are in front of a smooth waiting. A movie about patience and yes, cold blood mixed with some European hot flesh, mostly of Violante Placido, an Italian actress, singer and songwriter in her real life. It received 6.5 imdb rating, not quite bad, considering it is not the most profound movie of George Clooney, an actor of whom I said is a favorite of mine, but not enough featured in my posts. You may find him mentioned one more time, in the post about Mr. Fox. In the future, I’m going to spot out my favorite actors, or good actors and actresses I like, not in a particular order, but based of course on my erratic moods.

Thekla Reuten

Thekla Reuten, a Dutch actress with some Italian blood, plays a not so mysterious role in this European located movie. According to imdb , she is “an acclaimed international” actress. I think she appeared in Lost. I’m sure she appeared in more other productions, maybe not enough distributed in America. It is not my intention to spoil over the film, I like it’s pace, I like it’s tone, it is a “family” genre wrongly promoted otherwise. The director, Anton Corbin, made Metallica: The Videos 1989-2004 and Depeche Mode: One Night in Paris as a quick reference. He has directed another movie before, released in 2007, also connected with “music”, Control, about the controversial Ian Curtis, the Joy Division vocal who committed suicide at the age of twenty three, a better rated one.

The American - poster

All in all, this film is wrongly “explained”. As I said, without spoiling the subject, it is presented as an action without action. It is not an action movie, even if it looks like one. A guy, played by George Clooney, is teasing Irina Björklund’s (a voice in “Tom Clancy’s Endgame” video game) naked bottom, in a cottage in some woods. They went out, there is snow, and some other guys try to shot him with weapons with silencers attached. And that’s all the action in the first three minutes on screen. I invite you to see the rest, it’s also produced by Clooney, with a screenply by Rowan Joffe, after a novel written by Martin Booth, 6.5 imdb rating, 105 minutes.

[…] George Clooney, who also directed the movie is not the main character, but he is brilliant as usual. Exceptional are all the others, Philip Seymour Hoffman (Paul Zara), Paul Giamatti (Tom Duffy, the chief campaigner for the other Democrat challenger), Evan Rachel Wood (Molly Stearns, an intern), Marisa Tomei (Ida Horowicz, a fictional New York Times’ reporter or whatever), Jeffrey Wright (Senator Thompson, an influential in the State of Ohio), Max Minghella (a guy in the campaign staff). George Clooney is Mike Morris, Governor of Arkansas, running for Presidential elections in a Democratic Party Primary, very beautiful acted, iconic either. The main character is Stephen Meyers, the one played by Ryan Gosling, who has not been nominated this year for an Academy Award, like Clooney for the role in The Descendants. […]
