Thirteen Things One Can Learn From James Altucher

June 10, 2014 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

I like a lot The Altucher Confidential, it is one of my favorites in the blog world. I have discovered James Altucher by reading businessinsider.com, I have been impressed by his articles there and I followed the links. With him, it is not a matter of agreeing or not with his opinions, I bet that “normal” people would rather not agree with his sometimes different opinions, out of the mainstream. His writings are viable and I also like a lot the way he express himself.

I would be really sad to find that you haven’t heard of James Altucher and his endeavors, especially now, when his blog is more famous than ever. Judging after the Alexa index, his blog is a Top blog.

Reading his blog you can learn more than thirteen things, you can be sure of that. I just wanted with my post to expose some very important facts he lived, and he learned from, I consider them all right and are also a proof that he is not a fake. I have heard that there were people who offended him, and I’m really sorry for that, because as far as I have seen until now, he is a very good guy, with a lot of common sense not to make you feel wrong or embarrassed. He published last year a book called Choose Yourself! which I highly recommend. A few years ago, he offered another valuable book for free, just to spread more his beliefs and practices. I will not debate any of them This post is about thirteen things which came in my mind right now, and I’m convinced that they are valuable.

  1. Stay Healthy!

This is maybe not very original but is very logical. Without a healthy body, you can’t conceive healthy ideas. If you are bothered by a sick organ you have, you can’t concentrate very well on your projects. If you don’t have one, you can’t even think of one, if you are sick.

  2. Become an Entrepreneur!

As he said, you don’t have to become Mark Zuckerberg to be an entrepreneur, but you can leave your corporate work and do something on your own, it can be highly lucrative for you and for society. And as a matter of fact, the corporation may leave you out anyway, so you better be prepared. It is not exactly what he said, here, but is what I like to say that I learned from his sayings.

  3. Discipline yourself with a daily practice!

James Altucher conceived a daily practice which helps him to keep healthy all his bodies, and if we make something similar with us, with discipline, with program, with planning, we will achieve everything we propose ourselves to achieve. Of course, this is something my Adriana sermons me for years. And she is right!

  4. Do not gossip!

It is a bad habit, and think what if you are the subject of others’ gossip, would you like it? It’s not the point, actually. To gossip is disturbing from your purpose of being happy, if you have chosen that.

  5. Avoid negative persons!

A negative person is negatively influencing you in ways you can’t grasp at a first look. If you are an emotive type, you can unconsciously be deviated by a negative person in thought in any endeavor you have.

  6. Sleep between seven to nine hours per night!

You need to be rested to function correctly, even if you think you don’t need to sleep “so much”. That’s not true.

  7. Be generous!

You may think this a hard thing, or you may think that you are generous. Think again.

  8. Do what you like!

Another hard endeavor. If your ultimate purpose of what you do is money, and if in order to achieve them, you do things you don’t like, it’ll eventually end. The end will not be good for you, because you are going to loose the money, your chosen “purpose”.

  9. A negotiator is not a closer.

If you sell something, your ultimate goal is to “close the deal”. If you start by negotiating, you risk to lose the deal. It’s a matter of putting the point, but there are tons of books on the subject.

  10. Wake up early!

Early in the morning, when the “work” hasn’t started yet, it’s the best moment to practice what helps you achieving your goals.

  11. Write daily!

Do that, I’m serious. Doesn’t mean “publish” daily, otherwise you may panic, and that’s not lucrative.

  12. Read daily, at least two hours!

It’ll help chiseling your ignorance. Don’t take me wrong, I’m saying it in a Buddhist way, not to offend you.

  13. Help people!

Helping people is the fastest way to profits, and with that affirmation I literally quote him. You can find a lot of ways to help somebody, you know? More people you help, more success you’ll have. It’s called networking.

It is not at all exhaustive, and for that I am sorry. I have recently read a book (I don’t want to name it), where the author (very superficial) said that in order to write successfully, there are two possibilities for you: to have talent or not to have talent. I thought this really dumb. He plaid for his readers to do him a good review, and explaining very logically how a bad review won’t make the reviewer a better person. He was right. The book was free, the advice was so general that it could not in a thousand years to cause a legal different between the author and any reader, even if the book was a “How To…” type.

I can write another book only by talking of James Altucher. It doesn’t need to be a success :). We have at least one thing in common, a certain admiration and respect for Woody Allen, one of the most disciplined persons alive.
