The New Rainmaker

September 23, 2014 By Daniel Mihai Popescu 1 Comment

I have received yesterday a promotional e/mail from Brian Clark, the Copyblogger Media co-founder, announcing the official launch of something new, called “Rainmaker”. It’s a platform, he said, a revolutionary something which will save you time and nerves. It’s a sort of a site builder with click and drag, hosted on their own servers, so, if you sign up, you just migrate your domain (not the plural, you’ll see why) and that’s it, they give you a turnkey solution, where you have just concentrate on creating content, on business, on selling and whatever. I think it’s the smartest idea ever. I mean the idea with “launching” and all.

This is not a review, it is just an opinion. Back in time (not very long time ago, Copyblogger is just four years old or so, Brian Clark with some other people, launched Synthesis, a hosting solution for WordPress sites, but not any WordPress based, they were Genesis based. You know what WordPress is, and you know, I hope, that you have heard until now of Genesis, the best WordPress Theme ever. It’s a framework theme, a base which is not recommended to modify, which comes with a sort of pasted “child theme” on it, and that will be the paint to develop a custom design upon.

Maybe you also remember Premise, the “ultimate” landing pages solution which Copyblogger sold as a premium plugin. Nothing came cheap, but you are aware that cheap you pay and cheap you got. Premise had a very customizable core, and they wanted more, because they bored of one time payments. Premise forever, used to cost $175. Under $100 for one site, and that was all. So with Synthesis, they hosted and still do it now, I suppose, your WordPress site armed with Genesis and a child theme, but Genesis is what’s important. I am absolutely convinced of Genesis, I use it and I know now all its ups and downs. Not many downs, and that’s not the point now.

They combined Premise, the retreated plugin with Synthesis, and now you got “Rainmaker”.
Synthesis wasn’t the cheapest solution either, you can get 1Gb of memory, 20Gb of storage and 10Gb of backup for $47 per month for one site, for two or more, but less than five, you’ll have to pay $97 per month, and you’ll have all the storage and stuff doubled.

Chris Brogan moved chrisbrogan.com to the Rainmaker platform, because he wanted to work more on his business, and less on the details of maintaining a website. In case you’re not aware, Rainmaker is a hosted WordPress solution with a very customized back-end so that everything is a lot simpler and cleaner and easier to understand. By “hosted,” you have to pay a monthly fee to run the site on Copyblogger Media’s servers, and for the platform and all the themes. They give you twenty seven Studiopress child themes, which are compatible at the moment with the “platform”.

I like the look of his site now, and I think he’s being modest. He said that his goal is to build a business, not to become a WordPress wizard. Unfortunately, Rainmaker is not for everyone. You don’t want to loose time with technical stuff, you pay. Their introductory Pilot program offer is $95/month or $950/year, and all pending features listed on the trial page are included at no extra charge – your price is locked in for as long as you continue your account. For those who miss the Pilot Program, the advanced features will be offered in the future, in a more expensive plan. Every additional site will be $75 per month, or $750 per year.

Think about it! Think at my offer of just about $150 one time, with hosting included for one year, and every additional year, just $80. Isn’t it nice? Besides, you’ll have the power of Genesis and my support and maintenance!
