Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man

April 1, 2015 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

Dead Man - Johnny Depp, Mili Avital

Dead Man is a 1995 American movie written and directed by Jim Jarmusch. It is a Western-Drama-Fantasy with Johnny Depp and Gary Farmer, shot entirely in black and white. Johnny took his hat from Benny and Joon and carried magisterially on. I always wanted to feature Jim Jarmusch in Movie Personalities, because I'm a huge fan. I'm going to treat this more seriously. Like all his other movies (I think I have seen them all), Dead Man is a cult movie. It is a fantastic story pictured as a … [Read more...]

Amores Perros

Amores Perros - Gael García Bernal

Amores Perros is a 2000 Mexican drama thriller film directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and written by Guillermo Arriaga. I didn't know till recently that it made part of a trilogy, of whom the other two parts were 21 Grams and Babel. I liked 21 Grams, I liked only the story in Babel (wonderful story broken up by Brad Pitt "World War Z!" style, he's a specialist in being utterly non-credible), but I have enjoyed this one, Amores Perros, the most. [source: imdb] I have to be ashamed … [Read more...]

Mr. Nice, a Very Cool Movie

Mr. Nice - David Thewlis, Rhys Ifans

Mr. Nice is a British and Spanish co-production released in 2010, largely based on the best seller autobiography with the same name, by Howard Marks. The movie has a much lower degree of good appreciation than it deserves, which is very unfortunate. A certain pattern of education is implemented along the lines that the cannabis is bad and must not only be avoided, but has to be forbidden. Users and more than them, the merchants, must be punished through extermination. [source: imdb] It … [Read more...]

Valley of Flowers

Valley of Flowers - riding through the Himalayas

Valley of Flowers (La Vallée des fleurs) is a 2006 French-German-Indian Independent Film directed by Pan Nalin of Samsara fame. This is one of the best movies I've ever seen, it is beautiful, catchy, passionate, and spiritual. I think that it is unfortunately not known at large. I feel that writing about it, is revealing enough to spoil the surprise. [source of all pics: imdb] It is an adventurous romantic drama, it is a love story of at least two centuries, started at the beginnings of … [Read more...]

Oscars 2015 – The Results

Best Picture - Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)

Here is the full list of nominees and winners of the 87th Academy Awards, after the ceremony held on February 22nd, 2015. As you will see, no surprises, nothing out of range. Everybody almost expected these particular awards, I have no comments to add. Finally, Mr. Iñárritu has been awarded how he expected himself. With Babel, he just expected, but his expectations and hopes were turned upside down by Mr. Scorsese's friends and supporters. That was a surprise that I liked quite a lot. I remember … [Read more...]

My Grasp on the Oscars 2015

February 22, 2015 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

Boyhood - Patricia Arquette

I haven't got the time to watch Selma and Wild, and I'm not going to comment on them yet. Maybe I'll do it another day, long after the Oscars 2015. Not a big deal, I suppose. None of them are big favorites for the Best Picture, and Selma, for sample, doesn't have a nomination on other important categories either. Too bad for them. [source: imdb.com] All in all, it wasn't a spectacular year for Oscars. There is one exception though, The Grand Budapest Hotel, my only full 10 on the whole … [Read more...]
