The Old Man is a thriller drama series loosely inspired by Thomas Perry's homonym novel. Very entertaining considering that the show's hero is somehow different than the one in the book. Doesn't matter very much because of the two main stars: Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow. A bright contribution was provided as well by Arrested Development’s Alia Shawkat. She was good even if she wasn’t required to be funny here. [source:imdb.com] The Old Man - Plot I’m afraid most of you haven’t read … [Read more...]
Money Heist, or, La Casa de Papel, a Ridiculous but Catchy Drama
It is claimed that La Casa de Papel became at a time, the Netflix most-watched show in a foreign language ever. Hard to believe how they manage to top Squid Game, the Korean show, but there's time enough to reassess the balance. Anyway, for an absurd chain of heists in the Kingdom of Spain, almost as ridiculously put together as Prison Break, Money Heist swept viewers like a magnet in front of the screens. Maybe it was because Úrsula Corberó appeared totally nude for a fraction of a second in … [Read more...]
Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma – An Over Two Hours Long Featured Movie
I have finally had the opportunity to watch Alfonso Cuarón's Roma, and I was left with somehow a bitter taste. It was not because the movie is bad, far from that, but it is left unfinished, or, at least this is what I feel. I'm sure I'm not alone. The movie was exemplary acted by everyone involved. Some critics consider Roma the best movie of the decade. Which one, I wonder, 2010-2020, or 2009-2019? 2019 just started and there is time to judge for the next year. I don't subscribe to this still … [Read more...]
The Golden Globes 2018 Awards – Winners and Nominees
I used to think that the Golden Globes are less rated than the Oscars. I was wrong. I said somewhere, maybe on my Romanian blog, many years ago, that these awards are voted by intellectuals not by the trade members. The journalists who gave their vote for the Golden Globes 2018 Awards know where China, India or Bangladesh are situated on the map. I'm not so sure that 50% of the Academy members are that instructed. "Who cares?" can be their reaction, and indeed, it doesn't matter. I have great … [Read more...]
The Ambitious and Inventive Australian Flick, Boys in the Trees
Boys in the Trees is an Australian horror-ish fantasy drama about teen friendship in a town with an irrelevant importance name. This is the debut feature of a very promising filmmaker, the young Nicholas Verso, who has written and directed the movie. It has been released in 2016 and it was featured at the Venice Film Festival, in the same year. [source for all pics: imdb.com] Boys in the Trees - Plot I gave a 9 out of ten to this wonderful, and, at the same time, very sad movie. … [Read more...]
Captain Fantastic Can Help You Live a Better Life
I don't see another actor better than Viggo Mortensen as Captain Fantastic. This is almost a flawless educational movie. If you judge people on their political views, you can have a very biased feeling about this wonderful movie. This is because it's a little bit uncommon to find those beliefs in this bland world. You now believe in what you see in mass media, where you are tormented with imminent disaster, economical crisis, the 1%, terrorists, NSA, conspiracies and anti-Trump-ism. You are not … [Read more...]
