The Human Contract

April 12, 2014 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

The Human Contract - Jason Clarke, Paz Vega

“The Human Contract” seems to be a cookie baked in the Smith family. Jada Pinkett Smith is the writer, director, and actress, Will Smith is an executive producer. It catches the viewer, because it starts almost abruptly in a bar, with the handsome "Julian Wright" (played by “Zero Dark Thirty” and not only, Jason Clarke), in a sort of “light but not so light” flirty conversation with the alluring "Michael" (Paz Vega). The woman seems experienced in all sort of psychological handling, and Julian … [Read more...]

Quills

Quills - Geoffrey Rush

"Quills" is an extraordinary essay about talent and brilliancy. It doesn't matter that the critics and historians consider the movie historically inaccurate. It is perfectly acted and the ideas are very clearly presented. As the producers said in the year 2000, when the film was released, it was not about the accuracy, "but exploring issues such as censorship, pornography, sex, art, mental illness, and religion." (cf. Wikipedia) [source] - and all the others The movie depicts the period … [Read more...]

Life – The Movie

Life - Eddie Murphy, Martin Lawrence

Apparently, everyone seeing the trailer can say that this is another Eddie Murphy movie, and more than that, it got Martin Lawrence in it. I can say that this is the best movie with Eddie Murphy I've ever seen. I like his acting and his talent, even if he starred in a lot of flops as well. This one, Life, is a profound drama with a rating which is less than deserved. I'm afraid people expected a comedy, maybe quite a typical Murphy comedy, and they were disappointed by watching a serious movie … [Read more...]

Stranger Than Fiction

Stranger Than Fiction - poster

It is considered "comedy". It's not a classic one, maybe a black comedy, anyway, it's subtle. It's Will Ferrel's most serious role in his entire acting career, or I consider it so. It's also considered "drama", "fantasy" and "romance". I suppose these genres are more appropriate with this sensitive movie. I've seen it a few years ago, maybe just in the released year, 2006, I'm not sure anymore, and I was extremely pleasant impressed. As Adriana Popovici uses to say about a perfect made film, it … [Read more...]

Elite Squad 2 (Portuguese: Tropa de Elite 2 – O Inimigo Agora é Outro; literal: Elite Troop 2: Now the Enemy Is Another One) is a 2010 Brazilian film directed and produced by José Padilha, starring Wagner Moura. The other actors appeared somehow in the other film as well, some are new here. It is a sequel of the 2007 movie The Elite Squad. Elite Squad: The Enemy Within is a continuation of the semi-fictional account of the BOPE (Portuguese: Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais), the Special … [Read more...]

Tropa de Elite

August 2, 2012 By Daniel Mihai Popescu 1 Comment

Tropa de Elite or Elite Squad, as sounds the English translation, is a Brazilian action movie, one of the best ever made. The international critic is almost for the first time in agreement. It has an 8.0 imdb rate, a very big one. The Elite Squad was an outstanding commercial success, and became a cultural phenomenon in Brazil. The film won the Golden Bear at the 2008 Berlin Film Festival. Its sequel, The Elite Squad - The Enemy Within, released in Brazil on October 8, 2010, holds industry … [Read more...]
