The Nominees and Winners of the SAG Awards 2014

January 22, 2014 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

"Dallas Buyers Club" - Matthew McConaughey

Please, believe me that I wanted to write a review or two, before this list with nominees and winners, of yet another important event in cinema and television, the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The list and the pictures are taken again from CNN. I have just seen "The Wolf of Wall Street", which unfortunately has been by-passed by the Guild. Motion Picture Nominees Outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture • "12 Years a Slave" • "American Hustle" -- WINNER • "August: Osage … [Read more...]

Winners of the 2014 Golden Globes Awards

McConaughy and DiCaprio

This year I haven't done two posts with the Golden Globes, but one, which has the nominees and the winners all together. If it's too late, you may consider this post just for the record, you can find this certain list, easier here than wherever else. From the multitude of lists on the internet, I have chosen the one published by CNN. The post is indeed, just information, no comments. All pictures are from BBC. Best motion picture, drama • "12 Years a Slave" -- WINNER • "Captain … [Read more...]

Invictus – Review Dedicated to Nelson Mandela

December 6, 2013 By Daniel Mihai Popescu 2 Comments

Invictus - Morgan Freeman

This is a special movie, about a very special historical character. The recent death of President Nelson Mandela, made this movie more than special. It is a ten on my list, and that's amazing because I'm not very fond of Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman or Matt Damon. They are all great and awarded, and they all participated to give value to the movie. Clint Eastwood uses some cheap emotional clichés in almost every movie, so they are classic by now. This movie is a masterpiece. It shows without … [Read more...]

City of God

City of God - Alice Braga, Alexandre Rodrigues

City of God is the most famous Brazilian movie outside this country. I have reviewed in this subcategory, other two related Brazilian movies, Tropa de Elite and Elite Squad II: The Enemy Within. This last one, is the greatest Brazilian box-office success ever, it surpassed the adaptation for screen 1n 1976, of Jorge Amado’s Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands. This is by far the best Brazilian move I have ever seen and one of my favorite movies anyway! [source] The tagline is epic: “If you … [Read more...]

Layer Cake

October 21, 2013 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

Layer Cake - Colm Meaney, Daniel Craig, George Harris

Layer Cake is a very good British movie, made with Hollywood in mind, more in early Guy Richie’s style. Now this one uses a lot of John Woo special effects and in this computer era, one has to be Hanecke to still want to spend money for special locations or decors. It is dynamic and has a catchy action, not very logical, but who cares? It is with mob, drugs, killing, action and all of them at a very fast pacing, with a little dash of sex, just for completion. Director Matthew Vaughn, the close … [Read more...]

World War Z!

World War Z - The scarf wearing Brad Pitt

I knew it from the beginning that I'm going to waste precious time watching this ridiculous movie. I never was fond of zombies, nor of Brad Pitt. I remember his advert to Levis 501, I didn't know at the time it was him taking that bath on the river, the Amish girl excitedly waiting behind a tree, the focus was on the pair of jeans he has hidden under his underwear. When they launched Legends of the Fall, I was in France. I went to cinema and watch the movie in French, so his bad acting wasn't so … [Read more...]
