Sucker Punch, a Movie for Zombies

December 27, 2012 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

Sucker Punch - the steampunkish crap

Sucker Punch is a 2011 movie, directed by the sickening mind of Zack Snyder, the creator of Cruel and Unusual Films, a production company hatched together with his lovely wife, Deborah. It is considered on imdb, an action, comedy, thriller. It's rated 6.1, which is way too much. The first song, voice performed by young Emily Browning herself, looks like a cover over Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams", only it's a cover of cover after Marylin Manson, with some really cruel addiction. Last part wasn't in … [Read more...]

Show Me Love

Show Me Love - Alexandra Dahlström, Rebecka Liljeberg

A refreshing Swedish film from 1998, an European answer to American Pie... It was brilliant. This will be a short post about a teen movie. They were kids, they were disoriented, they were crazy but that was normal at their age. It's not normal to think it's funny to mug a retired person, but it was just a figure, a stylish one, nothing more. [source - this one and the rest of the pics in this post] It is a 7.7 imdb rated movie. It won some awards, especially in Europe: Best Foreign … [Read more...]

The Girl Next Door

Group Picture with Paul Dano, Amanda Swisten, Elisha Cuthbert, Emile Hirsh, Sung Hi Lee and Chris Marquette

Wonderful teenage movie, made in 2004 by Luke Greenfield (nothing quite memorable to this one), after a screenplay by Stuart Blumberg (Thanks for Sharing and The Kids Are All Right, both after this one), David Wagner (Van Wilder), and Brent Goldberg (Van Wilder and Saving Ryan's Privates - I liked the title of this last one, otherwise, I never heard of it as a movie). [all pics otherwise differently credited, are from imdb] Ambitious High School senior Matthew (Emile Hirsch), dreams of … [Read more...]

Mel Gibson

November 25, 2012 By Daniel Mihai Popescu 2 Comments

Mel Gibson with old friend Jodie Foster

Poor Mel Gibson! They say he's an alcoholic, they say he's violent, they say he's a lot of things that don't define him. He's talented, he used to be very good looking, he had a vision. He is a good actor, strangely. He has funny names. Born in the state of New York in 1956, from an Irish mother (née Reilly), and an Australian of an Irish descent, he was baptized Mel Colm-Cille Gerard Gibson. "Mel" and "Colm-Cille" are Irish saints names. He has another ten brothers, and when he was twelve, his … [Read more...]

Looking for Richard

November 22, 2012 By Daniel Mihai Popescu Leave a Comment

Al Pacino and Winona Ryder in "Looking for Richard"

This is a documentary directed by Al Pacino in 1996, having a very catchy tagline: "A four hundred year old work-in-progress." The main benefit is that it shows how interesting Shakespeare can be, it's a try to spread Shakespeare through the masses with the great movie actor star, Al Pacino. A good version of villain Richard, nice choice for the rest of the characters, exceptionally created. They even went all the way to England, to show us William Shakespeare's bed and to let Frederic Kimball's … [Read more...]

Borat

November 6, 2012 By Daniel Mihai Popescu 1 Comment

Borat is one of the most hilarious films I've ever seen, and it's on my favorites list. I'm not sure if this movie made Sacha Baron Cohen one of the most popular actors through the American public. It is a metaphor, it is ironic, it is brilliant. The mockumentary concept is not new, but was triple refined in this case. Borat is one of the best comedies ever made, it made my Best 20, and not only. I'm afraid, it wasn't wholly appreciated in USA and in Romania. You see, the Romanians are very … [Read more...]
